PAUL SAUER 2020

The new release of Kanonkop Estate's iconic Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style red wine is an annual highlight on the South African wine calendar, and this year is no exception.
The grapes for the Paul Sauer originate from vineyards averaging 30 years in age and grown on Kanonkop's decomposed granite soils. Winemaking adheres to the traditional principles that have made Kanonkop a renowned red wine producer. The grapes are harvested by hand, and go through three sorting processes before they are pumped into open concrete fermenters. Fermentation takes place at 29°C over five days, with the cap punched down manually every two hours to ensure a continual and gentle extraction and harmonious interaction between skins, flesh and juice.
The Cabernet Sauvignon (69%), Cabernet Franc (17%) and Merlot (14%) components are blended after malolactic fermentation whereafter the wine is placed in new 225l French oak barrels. As for each vintage, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 24 months.
"The aromatics are delicate yet sophisticated, whispering a rich complexity of saline cassis, sweet violets, dried sage, crunchy black berry, iodine and salty oyster shell nuances with a hint of melted candles and incense complexity. Fabulously pure, focused, weightless and intense, there is a notable ambition and intent on the palate, that bristles with a maritime salinity, deep layers of crème de cassis, blue berry, cedar spice and a tart red berry extravagance. This is simply like no other 2020 I have tasted from Stellenbosch. The wine possesses its own class, elegance and swagger, but with an incredible refinement and precision. You would expect nothing less from one of South Africa’s first growth producers!"

KANONKOP CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

This year marks 50 years since the first Kanonkop bottled wine was released in 1973 - a Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon.
While 50 years is just a blink in the eye of the wine world’s 6 000 year history, the half-century mark is something only a handful of South African wineries can lay claim to.
To celebrate this momentous ocasion, the first in a series of tasting events was held at Berry Brothers & Rudd in London on Thursday 11 May. The Masterclass was attended by UK trade and press and guests were treated to a selection of current and older vintages from the Kanonkop vinoteque. The highlight of the tasting was a rare bottle of the 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon - the first wine to carry the Kanonkop name and recently recorked for the occasion.
Wine critic Neal Martin, who also attended the tasting, said:
"The one takeaway from this tasting is that top-quality Pinotage mandates time in bottle. In the hands of winemakers that show it respect, Pinotage can excel and astonish when given sufficient time in bottle. It can be a bit sullen in its youth, but time seems to placate it as the tannins polymerise, rewarding patience with enticing secondary aromas and flavors."

The second event took place in France with a Masterclass for select members of the European and US wine trade at the beautiful Tiara Château Hôtel Mont Royal Chantilly, just north of Paris, on Friday 12 May. The tasting, hosted by cellarmaster Abrie Beeslaar, included 5 decades of Kanonkop Estate Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Paul Sauer. The highlight of this tasting was a rare appearance of the 1974 Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon, recently assessed and recorked under ideal conditions by Amorim Cork South Africa. The conclusion to our European celebration was an exceptional dinner hosted by owners Johann and Paul Krige at the same hotel.
Our celebration of 50 years came to an end when cellarmaster Abrie Beeslaar  visited the Big Apple on Monday 12 June. Another Masterclass tasting event was hosted at The Modern, a two Michelin-starred contemporary American restaurant in New York City. The occasion was shared with our US importer Cape Classics Wines, guests from the Wine Enthusiast and wine trade. The tasting, which spanned across five decades and included the very rare 1974 Kanonkop Pinotage, was ended with an exquisite pairing with our wines.
Now in its 13th year, the list of The World's Most Admired Wine Brands is the result of polling hundred of the world’s leading wine buyers, wholesalers, sommeliers, Masters of Wine, bar owners, wine writers, and educators from across the globe - considered to be the most influential group of wine industry experts ever assembled.
The voting criteria was based on the following three pillars to determine the Top 50:
  • Quality and consistency of wine
  • Price to quality ratio
  • Strength of branding and marketing
We are pleased to share with you that Kanonkop has been included on this prestigious list for the 3rd time, a serious achievement which we are extremely proud of.

KANONKOP PINOTAGE 2021

The new vintage of our famed Estate Pinotage has been released.
Cellarmaster Abrie Beeslaar says that a primary indicator of Kanonkop’s suitability for the making of great Pinotage lies in the vintage variation one finds in the wines.
“Every year’s wines show the detail of that season’s climate. This is truly fascinating for the wine-lover, as the label might say Kanonkop Pinotage, but each vintage puts a unique stamp on that year’s wines. But if there are two words I would use to typify this red wine from Kanonkop, it is elegance and grace. Some years the wines taste riper, more upfront fruit. Other years give a wine of more vibrant freshness. But always, there is elegance and the kind of grace one experiences when drinking a wine of true class.”
Our Pinotage is a great pairing with spicy Asian-style dishes, aromatic curries, venison, seared game and roasted duck.
