National Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year from September 15 through October 15, the United States celebrates the achievements, contributions, and cultural influence of Hispanic Americans throughout American history. September 15 marks the independence of various countries in Central America, including El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated on September 16. Chile’s Independence Day falls on September 18. The observation began in 1968 and was first named Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johson, and was later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 through Public Law 100-402. This year’s theme is “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.”
