Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
July 2022
Dear Volunteers,
Happy July! I hope your summer is off to a refreshing start. This has been an exciting month as we launched the new Gardens of Golden Gate Park Pass and Membership. In addition, preparations for Flower Piano are underway so keep an eye out for an email with volunteer opportunities for this magical event in the next few weeks. I hope to see you soon!

Helen Crocker Russell Library
Help out this weekend or in September!
Help us celebrate the end of Summer Reading Club by helping our library staff this Sunday, July 31 from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. If you can help out, please register here

In addition, we're excited to celebrate the Library’s 50th Anniversary on Saturday, September 10! The day will be filled with activities including a book sale and craft table. For the book sale, we are looking for help with set-up on Friday, September 9 and sale volunteers on Saturday, September 10. For the craft table, we are looking for welcoming volunteers to help assist kids and the young at heart with fun and easy crafts. If you can join us, please register here.

Juglans regia on the Great Meadow
As you may already know, we lost the beloved Juglans regia in the Great Meadow this month. The tree unexpectedly broke in half on Wednesday, July 6, and thankfully no one was hurt.
Thank you to our volunteers who fielded questions from visitors as events unfolded and to the horticulture team and tree crew for their quick work to clear the pathways for visitors. If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
In the event that you encounter questions from visitors while at the Garden, here are some talking points you may want to share:
  • We are saddened to lose this beautiful mature tree
  • The tree unexpectedly broke in half due to unforeseen rot and thankfully nobody was hurt. Also, thankfully the falling tree did not damage other plant collections or infrastructure
  • The remaining standing part of tree needed to be removed for safety reasons and was unsavable
In addition, I'm compiling photos, stories, and whatever else may come to mind as we reflect on the gift of our time with this tree. If you have anything you would like to share, please send it to me at clstone@sfbg.org.

Volunteer Spotlight: Danielle Raynal, Docent
Danielle Raynal completed the Garden's docent training in 2018, and has led public walking tours for 4 years. An avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, biking, and backpacking, Danielle took that training "to deepen my relationship with the natural world, improve my ability to notice and understand what's going on around me, and to share all of that with others. I'm severely extroverted, so what energizes me is sharing my own joy, curiosity, and wonder with our visitors. At the end of each tour, I ask the group 'What's one thing you're taking from the Garden with you today?' and I really enjoy hearing everyone's different takeaways and observations."

Danielle clearly loves to share her enthusiasm for both nature and for the Garden. "Just before the Garden briefly closed for the pandemic, I spent a Sunday afternoon at the Garden filming myself talking about different plants. Over the coming weeks while everyone was isolated and sheltering in place, I posted my virtual tour videos on social media. It was really sweet to hear how my friends would share tour tidbits with their roommates, families, and communities: a reminder of how important it is for us to stay connected to nature and to each other."

Whether through formal public or private tours, or our "rovers" who simply engage incidentally with guests to answer questions or provide information, we're fortunate to have Danielle and our wonderful team of Garden docents and guides who help make a trip to the Garden a very memorable experience for visitors!

Thank you to Steve Bell for interviewing and photographing Danielle - and thank you Danielle for sharing a bit about your volunteer journey!

Garden Camp Reminder
With just a few weeks of Garden Camp remaining, Jenn Tapler has a helpful reminder for volunteers and staff:
If anyone encounters a Garden Camp group that is breaking rules or doing something that looks inappropriate, we absolutely do encourage people to step in and speak to them [Garden Camp staff]. Garden Camp staff is very responsive to any feedback we receive from others in the Garden. That said – campers should never be addressed directly by anyone other than Garden Camp staff, especially in a negative way.

    • San Francisco Botanical Garden docents and guides have engaged with 812 visitors so far this month. Thank you for deepening the connections our visitors are able to make at the Garden!

    Best wishes,
    Crystal
