Words of Wisdom from the Dean of Classical Curriculum
Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.
So begins Sir Francis Bacon’s essay, “Of Studies.” As the father of the scientific method, he staunchly defended the use of inductive reasoning in the pursuit of knowledge. His Novum Organum (“new method”) marked a clear break with the Scholastic tradition. But, in “Of Studies”, he betrays an appreciation for the well-watered roots of classical education. I want to share with you some of my favorite insights from his essay.
