Message from the Associate Vice-President and Director of Extension

Last week’s Extension Conference was a great success. Although having the conference on campus meant a few more steps outdoors, I think everyone enjoyed seeing the campus, seeing the changes in the buildings, and reminding themselves that they are part of a much greater whole.

I want to thank University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins for visiting with us and sharing his support for Extension’s great work around the state. I also want to thank Vice-President Shane C. Burgess, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Science, for attending. As he mentioned, this is one of the conferences he enjoys attending because he gets an update on what is happening across the state, and it allows him to visit and catch up with Extension personnel.

Finally, thanks to Susan and Ashley and the entire conference committee, the people behind the conference committee, and then the people we never see but who we all know do so much. Great conferences do not happen on their own, and we appreciate everyone’s effort in making this conference one of our best!

Ron and Laura James with Dr. Ed Martin, state Director of Extension

Congrats to the 2023
Friends of Extension Award Recipients

Ron and Laura James received the award at our Annual Extension Conference last week with a standing ovation from their Extension friends.

In 2012, they helped the university purchase Henry Dahlberg's Camp on top of Mingus Mountain to serve as the heart and hub of Arizona's 4-H Youth Development Program. Since then, the Harold and Mitzie James 4-H Camp & Outdoor Learning Center has served as the premier place for youth from across Arizona to grow as leaders, learn how to respect nature, and form lifelong friendships.

We appreciate all the James family has done for the university, our college, our division, and Cooperative Extension. We are honored to call James family, Friends of Extension.

Be sure to Check Out Our

Needs Assessment Dashboard

The Norton School of Human Ecology's Community Research, Evaluation and Development team has developed an interactive dashboard that allows users to parse data from last year's Extension needs assessment survey in numerous useful ways.

With the dashboard, you can explore how priorities differ among groups – such as rural, older, or low-income residents – across Arizona's 15 counties. The data can help inform programming decisions. Anyone can access the dashboard by completing this online form. See the Cooperative Extension needs assessment page to learn more about the 2022 needs assessment survey that led to the dashboard

Making Professional Websites with Quarto & RStudio

Professional websites are a useful way to connect and share your work with others. While there are a lot of tools available to create websites, we will show you how to create yours with Quarto. Quarto is a free scientific and technical publishing system for creating documents, presentations, and websites. This platform evolved from R Markdown (though don’t worry if you haven’t heard of either Quarto or R Markdown).

In this workshop, we’ll include the basics of Quarto, and use it to create and customize a website. You will leave this workshop with a published website. This can be used as a personal website, research projects or other endeavors.

Make sure to have all the pre-requisites on the workshop page ready by the workshop! Click here to register.
