Evaluating the Risk
Should colleges and universities resume in-person classes for the Fall 2020 semester? This is a question that a Clemson COVID Challenge team of Clemson undergraduates began to explore back in late May 2020. The team was mentored by Sharon Bewick, an assistant professor in the College of Science’s department of biological sciences, and featured undergraduate students Erika Ludden, who is majoring in microbiology, and Joseph Matthews, who is majoring in mathematical sciences.

Lawrence Aldine Bearden and the other new “rats” arriving at Clemson College as members of the Class of 1945 were treated to the exciting news that $110,000 in bonds had been sold to fund “Clemson’s long-cherished project—the construction of a 20,000 seat capacity modern stadium.”

Power of Perspective
A panel of three Clemson faculty will discuss how educational attainment, including P-12 and higher education, is often viewed as the key to upward mobility while simultaneously having components reinforcing inequity and injustice. It will be the third “Power of Perspective” panel discussion, presented from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Unmarked Graves
Ground-penetrating radar has revealed the possible locations of more than 200 unmarked graves in Woodland Cemetery on the Clemson University campus believed to date back more than a century. The graves are thought to be those of enslaved people who worked from about 1830 to 1865 on John C. Calhoun’s Fort Hill Plantation and later as sharecroppers and Black laborers, including convicted individuals involved in the construction of Clemson College from 1890 to 1915. All are believed to be African Americans.

Assisting Forensic Research
A new app created by Clemson researcher, Katherine Weisensee, allows coroners and forensic teams to enter observations when human remains are recovered and then upload photos along with accompanying information related to variables such as geography and crime scene data.

Though strict landlord regulation may result in fewer evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, research by a professor cautions that too much protection for tenants could result in fewer and more expensive rental properties, prompting increased homelessness.
