Addressing School Safety
The TDSB is committed to schools that are caring, safe, welcoming, and respectful. Student and school safety is an urgent priority for staff, students, families, and community members and the TDSB will continue to invest resources in school safety. The Board is taking a number of different steps to improve school safety across the Board including the hiring of additional staff to better support students, staff and school communities, creating a Safe Schools Audit Team to work with schools on safety issues, and forming an Expert Table Reference Group related to school and community safety with representation from service providers across the City (e.g. The Centre for Mental Health and Addiction, Toronto Public Health, City of Toronto) and include students, parents, Trustees, staff, and faith-based groups. Learn more about what the TDSB is doing to make schools safer.
Reducing Spread of Respiratory Illness
Recently, there has been an increase in respiratory viruses among children, including Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Influenza and COVID-19. Please review this important message from Toronto Public Health about the steps that can be taken to help keep children and others safe. Please note that Toronto Public Health, together with Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, strongly recommends wearing a well-fitted mask in indoor public settings, including in schools and childcares. The TDSB continues to provide medical masks to staff and students who want to wear one.
Inclement Weather
Winter is here! With our cold Canadian winter comes snow, ice, and severe weather. It is occasionally necessary to cancel student transportation, classes and/or programs. Occasionally, severe weather forces the closure of our schools and administrative offices. Visit the website to learn more about Snow/Cold Weather and the Procedure for Severe Weather.
Middle French Immersion Application Process
The entry point to the Middle French Immersion program for September 2023 is Grade 4. The online application process for Middle French Immersion will take place between January 9 and February 3, 2023. An offer of placement in the program (not a specific school) is guaranteed to all on-time applicants. Families with an older sibling currently enrolled in a French program and who will be in attendance next year are still required to complete an online application for the new student. Please select the “sibling option” within the online application.
Outdoor Education at the TDSB
At the TDSB, we are committed to outdoor education and offer students “beyond the classroom” learning experiences that cannot be created inside a classroom. Outdoor education brings learning to life and connects students to the built and natural world around them. All activities are curriculum-based and customized to meet the different learning needs of students. Learn more and view a video on the Outdoor Education webpage.
Long-Term Program and Accommodation Strategy 2022-2031
The Long-Term Program and Accommodation Strategy document (LTPAS) was approved by the Board of Trustees on October 26, 2022. Parents/guardians/caregivers, and community members can find the names of schools that could be involved in future reviews. It has been posted in its entirety on the TDSB website.
Mental Health and Well-Being
Supporting students is our priority. The TDSB is here to help with anything students need to support their mental health and well-being and to help them navigate the tools and resources they may need. Check out our mental health and well-being website for resources, webinars and drop-in times to help support families’ and students’ well-being all year.
