Emory OSRL Indigenous People’s Day Event 2021
Indigenous Storytelling: Language, Culture, and Nature with Dr. Maung Nyeu
Monday, October 11, 1:00-2:00 p.m., Zoom Webinar
Dr. Maung Nyeu is a Buddhist member of the Marma Indigenous Peoples, one of the several Indigenous Communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. He is the founder and executive director of Our Golden Hour, an organization committed to extending educational opportunities for children in marginalized communities and underserved areas.
In this conversation with Buddhist Chaplain Venerable Priya Sraman, Dr. Maung will share the stories of Indigenous Peoples of Chittagong Hill Tracts, and the intersection between their language, culture, natural environment, and spirituality. Dr. Maung has been engaged in efforts to preserve and pass on these Indigenous languages and culture to the next generation.

Emory Land Acknowledgement Approved; Indigenous Language Path Working Group to Form
Monday, September 27
The Emory Board of Trustees has approved an official Land Acknowledgment for Emory University. It was composed by a group of Emory leaders, historians, and experts from across the university, building upon years of work undertaken by faculty, staff, and students to recognize the legacy of Native and Indigenous dispossession on the lands of Emory’s campuses.
President Fenves also announced the formation of a working group to advance plans for the development of a Language Path on the Emory campuses to honor the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and highlight the Muscogee language and culture. The chairs of the working group will be Malinda Maynor Lowery, Cahoon Family Professor of American History in Emory College; and Gregory McGonigle, Dean of Religious Life and University Chaplain. Emory will continue to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day moving forward. And the university will work to develop and offer academic and community programming to deepen our knowledge of the lives and legacies of Native and Indigenous peoples.

Emory University is working with Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) to facilitate an interfaith strategic planning process that will result in a multi-year spiritual life strategic plan. As part of this process, we want to understand how the Emory community currently engages religious, spiritual, and philosophical life and to explore ideas for the future.
To ensure our comprehensiveness, we would like to invite you to share your experiences of religious, spiritual, and philosophical life at Emory by answering a five-question survey. The International Spouse Group supports the families of international students, researchers, and faculty members at Emory University. For those families who have just arrived at Emory, we offer an opportunity for the spouses of the students to get acquainted with other international familities, practice speaking English, and learn to navigate life in the United States. Our hope is to offer ongoing support for the spouses and families for the duration of their stay at Emory, developing friendships and assisting each other with family life.
We meet every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. for an informal time of tea and discussion. Our meetings are hosted by the University Catholic Center (1753 N Decatur Road). Walk-In Flu Vaccine Clinic

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential that everyone in the Emory community take steps now to get the shot and avoid contracting the flu. We must work together to keep our entire university community as healthy as possible and minimize the pandemic’s impact on students’ academic schedules and Emory experience. It is also critical to avoid confusing flu with COVID-19 symptoms and help reduce the already heavy burden on our health care systems from a significant number of COVID-related and other illnesses.
Emory University now requires that all students, faculty, and staff receive a flu vaccination by Oct. 29, and requires the flu vaccine for Spring enrollment.
Flu shots are FREE for all EMORY Students.
Beginning Monday, September 20, Flu shots are also available during any Student Health Services visit (except for COVID-19 related visits). The vaccines are free for all students. For more information, visit Student Health Services flu vaccine site here.
