The 2023 Diversity Leadership Summit hosted by the Leadership Education and Development Office and the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment will take place on Saturday, March 4th from 10:00am-4:00pm. More information will be available in late January.
The Diversity Leadership Summit positions the campus community to come together in various ways to learn, collaborate, and teach about social justice issues that impact our campus, our local communities and beyond. As a result of participating in the 2023 Mason Leadership Summit, attendees will:
  • Recognize the diversity of our thoughts, voices, contributions, and lived experiences that strengthen our community and the world
  • Engage in critical dialogue with others around various social justice issues that impact our campus, local communities, and beyond

LEAD Workshop Requests

Request a workshop for your team(s) or class now!
Are you looking to have specialized leadership development workshops for you and your team? Would you like to understand more about the various aspects of leadership, how to grow in your leadership and make a positive impact, and/or promote team building and cohesion? Then you should consider requesting one of LEAD’s in-person or virtual workshops facilitated by our staff. We have peer to peer workshops facilitated by our student Leadership Consultants (LCs) and workshops facilitated by our professional staff members respectively.
Some of our key workshops include Goal Setting and Vision Development which facilitates the process of envisioning future possibilities as well as discovering commitment and passion, True Colors which provides a model for understanding yourself based on your personality temperament, StrengthsFinder where you will discover and learn how to use your Top 5 strengths (Gallup CliftonStrengths Assessment Instrument), and Emotionally Intelligent Leadership where you will learn more about the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership, as well as many other workshops to choose from!

Still not sure about requesting a workshop? Here are some comments some participants gave about what they enjoyed most about our workshops:
  • “The way it showed so many different ways you can show your leadership”
  • “Learning more about how I can be a better leader
  • “I liked getting to talk with my peers who have similar thinking patterns to me
  • “I loved the opportunity to reflect on the ways that we can show up as leaders every day”
  • “I really enjoyed the engaging activities and scenarios that we were given and had to discuss our opinions and why we chose our answer”
  • “I loved how there was no pressure and no judgement”
  • “That we are all different but have our strong points and weak points
  • “The workshop got us up and moving

Please note the following before requesting a workshop:
  • We offer in-person and virtual workshops. Please be sure to select the correct workshop request form before submitting. Note: The group must be all in person or all virtual- we find that it does not work well to have some of the group in person and some virtual.
  • The intended audience must be currently enrolled Mason students, faculty/staff, or alumni.
  • Minimum attendance of 10 is required. If you are requesting a presentation for a student organization or residence hall, we ask that you make pre-registration available. You must provide the list of registered attendees to us the business day before the event.
  • Requests should be submitted at least two (2) weeks in advance of your preferred date. Due to limited staff resources, we may not be able to accommodate requests that do not have a two-week lead time.

RECENT LEAD HIGHLIGHTS!

Active Leaders Cohort (Fall 2022)

LEAD has been offering the Active Leaders cohort program for over 12 years and a record 38 Mason students fully completed the program in Fall 2022. Active Leaders provides a more advanced leadership opportunity for any Mason student (undergraduate or graduate) and is for both those who are in, and not in, leadership positions. Participants learned more about themselves, how to work more effectively in groups and how to help organizations to be more successful.
Completing Active Leaders requires that participants attend at least 8 out of 10 sessions. The program is a 10-week (2 hours each week), in-person leadership seminar. The cohort met on Fridays from 10am-Noon, from Friday, Sept 16, 2022 through Friday, November 18. The Active Leaders cohort engaged in education and learning around the following topics:
  • Leadership 101: What is leadership
  • Strengths: Discovering and Using Your Strengths
  • Values & Time Management
  • Ethical Leadership & Leading Positive Chang
  • Resilience, Well-Being & Leadership
  • Emotionally Intelligent Leadership
  • Service & Civic Engagement
  • Positive Conflict Management
  • Inclusive Leadership
  • Leadership Purpose, Goal Setting & Commencement

President Washington’s Leadership Seminar (Fall 2022)

The President’s Leadership Seminar is an interactive and engaging experience that allows students to participate in a cohort leadership seminar with President Gregory Washington. Students had an opportunity to engage and connect directly with President Washington, guest leaders, and other students in several interactive leadership seminars throughout the year focused on: (1) practical leadership skills, (2) interpersonal competence, (3) global and multicultural inclusion, (4) identity development, (5) social responsibility, and (6) well-being. Students also had an opportunity to discover something new about themselves and their leadership through critical thinking, reasoning, logic, and challenging their own thought processes and beliefs.
The Fall 2022 seminar cohort concluded a wonderful semester with a dinner at the Mathy House with President Washington and Mrs. Washington!

LEAD Fall 2022 Service Projects

Last year at the end of the Fall semester LEAD organized 2 service projects to engage in the community and to help make a positive impact on others and the environment. We held a closet exchange on December 1st from 1pm to 6pm in the Hub, and we collected toy donations up until mid-December.

Closet Exchange
Our leadership consultants spearheaded a closet exchange after black Friday so that people could bring in old clothes and exchange them for new ones rather than throwing out or holding onto unwanted clothes. The event was well attended and helped to minimize the impact of clothes waste on campus by repurposing items and promoting the exchange of second-hand clothes rather than the purchase of new items as well in an aim to be more environmentally friendly.

Toys for Tots
Our second service project was a partnership with Toys for Tots program which is dedicated to bringing the joy of Christmas to less fortunate kids through new toy donations. The LEAD office participated this year to collect toys for Toys for Tots to be donated to children in the area in need of some Christmas cheer! We are thankful for all those in the Mason community who donated and helped make a positive impact this past Christmas!
