The term climate-smart agriculture was first coined in 2010, but has gotten more attention over the last several years. In this webinar we will feature 3 climate-smart agriculture projects that are working to expand climate-smart ag practice implementation across the North Central Region - The Alliance to Advance Climate-Smart Ag Program, the Climate-Ready Farm Assessment Tool, and the Satellite-Driven Data for Climate-Smart Ag Inventory. Mark Warman has been an active natural resources professional for the past 12 years. His pathway includes work as a program manager on the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern, as a Naturalist at the Watershed Stewardship Center at Cleveland Metroparks, and for the past eight years on a grant-funded project to survey and manage aquatic invasive plants in Ohio’s Lake Erie Basin. We are excited to share that the Algal Bloom Action Team is once again hosting their annual Virtual Harmful Algal Bloom Research Symposium. This marks the 5th year the team will host the symposium focusing on emerging harmful algal bloom or HAB research, education and outreach.
The symposium is from 9AM – 4:30PM CT on Thursday, January 9th and is free to attend. Read on

2025 Michigan Manure Summit January 22nd, 2025 The Michigan Manure Summit is an annual educational event affiliated with the Michigan Manure Hauler Certification Program. Anyone who hauls manure is encouraged to attend. Topics that will be addressed include biosecurity, spill response scenario training, climate resiliency, managing compaction, BMPs for solid and liquid manure application, and other relevant topics to manure application. 2025 Iowa PFAS Conference in Iowa City April 15-16, 2025 The conference is designed to exchange ideas and findings, provide learning and networking opportunities, and explore new ways to test and deal with PFAS in environmental and biological samples. They also have an open call for abstract submissions for oral presentations highlighting your insights and experiences with PFAS-related projects at the 2025 Iowa PFAS Conference. The deadline for abstract submissions is February 15, 2025. Learn more
Funding and Opportunities South Dakota State University Hiring a Water Resources Insititute Director The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department (ABED) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) excited to announce a new opening for the William Mibra Griffith and Byrne S. Griffith Endowed Chair in Agriculture and Water Resources and South Dakota Water Resources Institute Director. We are seeking a scientific leader to collaboratively enhance the region’s water resources sector. This role will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of water-related research and outreach initiatives. Funding Opportunity from USACEHQ Harmful Algal Bloom Demonstration Program The announcement of the US Army Corps of Engineers Harmful Algal Bloom Demonstration Program funding opportunity has been released! Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) represent a significant and costly threat to our Nation’s economy and natural resources. The U.S. Army ERDC seeks innovative, cost-effective, and scalable technologies for early detection, prevention, and management of HABs. Submissions are being accepted now until January 27, 2025. News New Guidance Supports Nationwide Soil Moisture Monitoring Soil moisture plays an important role in drought and flood forecasting, agricultural monitoring, forest fire prediction, and more. NIDIS, with partners across the National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network (NCSMMN), recently published two technical assistance resources that synthesize best practices for soil moisture data providers: Soil Moisture Data Quality Guidance and Soil Moisture Metadata Guidance
USDA Invests $7 Million in Eight Wetland Mitigation Banking Projects to Support Producers and Protect Wetland Ecosystems The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $7 million in eight projects to support the development of wetland mitigation banks for agricultural producers through the Wetland Mitigation Banking Program (WMBP). Through wetland mitigation banks, wetlands are restored, created, or enhanced, generating credits that can be purchased by producers looking to compensate for unavoidable impacts to wetlands at another location. Cover Survey Results Show Increase in Cover Cropping, Less Tillage Results from the annual Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council crop survey show Iowa farmers planted more than 3.8 million acres of cover crops in the 2023 crop year. INREC initiated the yearly survey in 2017 as part of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy to track tillage practices, crop rotations, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and manure fertilizer applications. These practices can reduce the amount of nutrients, notably nitrogen and phosphorus, that run off cropland and into waterways. Learn more
