Weekly Watch - Miserere Mei
Choral pieces seem to get the most positive responses to the Weekly Watch, so I’m sharing the “Miserere Mei,” one of my favorite pieces. It was written in 1638 by Allegri, a singer in the Sistine Chapel. It was considered so special that the Pope would not release copies of the score. In 1770, Mozart, as a young 14-year old, heard it sung in the Vatican, went home, and wrote out the score from memory.
Here is a recording by the Men and Boys Choir of King’s College at Cambridge University where I heard it sung. It is also a regular with the Grand Rapids Men and Boys Choir.
