MESSAGE FROM DEAN MITHCELL
|
Hello future Tiger Teachers. We created this monthly newsletter to connect you to one another and to resources to help your LSU journey be successful; to share important speakers and content that will build your skills and knowledge as educators; and to give you confidence that your choice to be a teacher is bold, exciting, and necessary.
NOTE - The videos/speakers you see below are from our NEW, introductory course for incoming freshmen. We know that schedules did not permit everyone to take advantage of this new benefit, and we don't want you to miss out. We'll post all of the videos here so you may revisit a speaker who made an impact or so you may see it for the first time!
Tiger Teacher Corps is for ALL future teachers - no matter your major/area of focus/college/unit at LSU. You're receiving this email because we want to serve you. Send us your ideas for future content and let us know what you like...and what you would like to see that is not here! Thank you for choosing to teach. I cannot wait to see how you geaux change lives.

Kim Skinner, PhD
Associate Professor, Literacy Education Coordinator, Curriculum Theory Project Faculty
For more than 12 years, Dr. Kim Skinner has led a meaningful service-learning project at the Carver Library in Old South Baton Rouge. Through the Carver Cubs Summer Reading Camp—a partnership between the LSU School of Education and the East Baton Rouge Parish Library—30–40 children each summer receive free, high-quality reading instruction. The camp is taught by LSU graduate students enrolled in summer reading specialist courses, giving aspiring educators valuable hands-on experience.
The program, initiated by Dr. Stan Barrera in 2012 and now expanded with the contributions of Dr. Laura Piestrzynski, reflects Dr. Skinner’s commitment to literacy education and community engagement. As she often echoes John Dewey’s philosophy:
“Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not a preparation for life but is life itself.”
Fun Facts about Dr. Skinner
Favorite food: Anything chocolate
Fun fact: She has taught Philosophy for Children clubs after school, exploring “big questions with little thinkers.”
