Opening emergency winter shelter
|
Winter is still days away, but intense cold has already arrived. To help preserve life and safety when unhoused community members are most vulnerable to the elements, we're offering select City-owned properties to the regional Severe Weather Shelter program. Vancouver’s new, nightly winter and severe weather shelters – launched under the City’s Homeless Emergency Declaration – are opening, in part, after experiencing a shortage of shelter space to house people during winter storms in early 2024, and as an emergency response to the immediate need for increased shelter capacity.

Troy Price sworn in as Vancouver's Chief of Police
|
On Monday, we swore in Vancouver's next Police Chief: Troy Price. Chief Price brings more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement to the role. Since joining the Vancouver Police Department in 1997 as a lateral patrol officer, he’s held nearly every rank, shaping public safety efforts and mentoring the next generation of officers.
“There’s a community out here, 200,000 strong, relying on us to keep Vancouver safe and vibrant,” reflected Chief Price. “We’re committed to making this the safest urban city in Washington.”

Homelessness emergency response efforts house 130 people, clean up 400 tons of trash year to date
|
On Monday, Homeless Response Manager Jamie Spinelli presented a year-end report on the City's response efforts and outcomes since declaring a state of emergency in Nov. 2023.
Spinelli's report also shared the results of Clark County's annual Point in Time Count in January and the City's own count conducted within Vancouver City limits last July.

Our Vancouver plan will help increase housing choice and affordability
|
Housing costs across the country have increased dramatically over the past decade. These rising costs are a driving force behind people experiencing houselessness.
To help keep our community livable and affordable, at least 38,000 more homes will need to be built between now and 2045. One way we will do this is by allowing people to build “middle housing” in areas where housing options are currently limited to single-family residences. Middle housing includes things like duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes, townhomes, and backyard cottages. Allowing middle housing and other updates to the City's land use plan will help us meet our housing needs and comply with new state laws.

Breaking ground on the future of Main Street
|
Last week marked a historic moment for Vancouver as we celebrated the ceremonial construction groundbreaking for the Main Street Promise streetscape project–more than 30 years in the making! Funded in-part by one-time American Rescue Plan Act federal dollars, this project will breathe new life into our downtown, transforming Main Street, from 5th to 15th, into a safer, more accessible and better-connected corridor. Construction kicks off this January.
