NYU Shanghai Receives International Design Awards

NYU Shanghai’s New Bund campus won three awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the 2024 International Design Awards in Hong Kong - a Merit Award in Architecture, as well as two other recognitions for Sustainable Future and Inclusive Design Excellence.

Research Excellence: Fall 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium
NYU Shanghai undergraduates shared their work at the Fall 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium on November 8. There were presentations by 31 student research groups on a diverse range of topics, including postpartum mental health, China’s labor market, and the brain’s attention tracking.

Breakthrough in Logic Control of Exciton-Polaritons
Exciton-polaritons are part-light, part-matter particles that exist in semiconductors and have huge potential for photonic circuits. In a recent study published in Nature Photonics, NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics at NYU Shanghai members and collaborators have implemented the full set of logical gate functionalities (temporal and, or and not gates) in localized exciton polaritons at room temperature. The polariton logic gates demonstrate advantages in ultrafast switching, universality and simplified compatibility, showing great potential for building polariton logic networks.

• NYU Shanghai held the first meeting of the newly formed Staff Council on Friday, November 8. A packed auditorium with staff members gathered to hear as inaugural co-chairs of the Staff Council, Registrar and Chief Diversity Officer Winnie Wilson and HR Director Guo Wei, introduced the Staff Council Bylaws, seven staff-led committees, and the election process for committee chairpeople.

• As honeybees prepare for winter, Marco Sentinelli—an expert in AI and founder of Urban Bees Shanghai—gave a talk at IMA on November 11. The veteran 17-year beekeeper brought a beehive frame from his local apiary, along with beeswax, to demonstrate the differences between 100% beeswax and partially processed products. He discussed the intersection of art, beekeeping, ecology, and ethics and showed how artists have experimented with beekeeping as part of their artistic production.

Less Meat Production, More Trees
Just a 13% reduction in meat production in wealthy nations would allow more trees which could absorb 125 billion tons of carbon dioxide—exceeding the total number of global fossil fuel emissions over the past three years—from the atmosphere, according to a study published in PNAS and led by NYU Environmental Studies Assistant Professor Matthew N. Hayek.
