Friends United Meeting has recently reached out to let us know Rania Maayeh, head of Ramallah Friends School, will join BYM Friends at our Annual Sessions. A Palestinian Christian, Rania has been a student, parent, teacher, and now head of school at RFS. In addition to her duties at RFS, Rania has worked for World Vision as the Education Lead for Jerusalem, West Bank, and Gaza. In the mist of the onging violence, Rania will join BYM Friends to give an update on the school, its students and teachers, and her vision for what we can do right now to help young people living through war.

Veterans for Peace - PeaceWalk 2024
Veterans for Peace kicked off PeaceWalk2024 last month, with participants walking from Maine to Washington, DC. PeaceWalk 2024 is open to all who love peace and want to walk for it. Folks can join the walk for as little or as long as they wish. The Walk will be coming through the BYM area about June 21-July 2nd and presentations are already planned at several BYM Monthly Meetings (Deer Creek, Little Falls, and Homewood - so far!) The 2024 PeaceWalk is dedicated to Daniel Ellsberg, the man who released the Pentagon Papers and exposed the lies that Americans were being told about the Vietnam War. Dan spent nearly every waking hour of the next five decades working for peace and trying to prevent nuclear war. More details and ways to get involved here.
DC Silent Peace Walk, June 23
You are invited to join five DC/Baltimore area mindfulness communities practicing in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, in a silent, meditative walk for peace at 3 pm on Sunday, June 23 in Washington DC. The walk will happen on the same day as a similar peace walk taking place in London that is sponsored by local Buddhist and Quaker communities. We are walking for peace because we believe that every human being is sacred and worthy of protection. Our hearts are shattered by the horrific loss of lives caused by armed conflict in the world. We walk to end all violence and killing everywhere. In that spirit, we ask that participants do not bring any banners, placards or flags. Meet in front of the Smithsonian Castle (Smithsonian Metro north exit). Details here.
Host Guatamalan Friend Miguel Costop, July 4-9
Joe and Jane Snyder (Multnomah Friends Meeting, Portland, Oregon) seek BYM Friends and Meetings to host Miguel Costop (Guatamala Friends Meeting). Progresa, the Friends Guatemala Scholarship Program, has been providing scholarships and support for young, indigenous Maya students to study in universities in Guatemala for over 50 years. Miguel Costop, the director of the program, himself Kakchiqel Maya and a graduate of the program, will be in the U.S. for the FGC Gathering at Haverford and seeks to visit among BYM Friends. Miguel is prepared to share about the program, current and historical information about Guatemala and its young people, Mayan culture, his own journey, and and how Friends can get involved in the Progresa scholarship program. If your Meeting would like to host Miguel, Joe, and Jane - please email Admin@bym-rsf.org and we will put you in touch with Joe.
