BYM, the Pawnee People, and Racial Justice
|
On Thursday of next week, Reparations to Pawnee people will be considered at Annual Session. The proposed redress of $20,000 flows from the period after Quakers requested President Grant to appoint them as Indian agents. BYM was responsible for the Pawnee agency including its education programs. Our Quaker ancestors insisted on English-only speaking and reading. Since 2016, Friends in the U.S. have considered ways to take accountability and responsibility for Quaker run Indian boarding school and the issue has been seasoned by the BYM Indigenous Affairs Committee for years. For BYM, this is part of its BIPOC and anti-racism concerns.
