A Message from Rwanda English Project
I’m reaching out with an urgent plea. Our funds are critically low, and without additional support, most instruction will cease by the end of February.
|
| |
|
Currently, we teach spoken English to 1,065 student teachers across four teacher training colleges and over 200 public school teachers in 22 schools. Staff in these colleges are also being prepared to teach DISE, allowing us to expand next year to serve 12 of the 16 training colleges and more public schools in Bugesera District.
Over the past year, I’ve focused on securing funding and preparing local staff to sustain the project in three years. Despite writing three grants (two denied, one pending) and reaching out to education leaders, funding remains a challenge. Recently, the Director General of Education and the World Bank recognized our impact, but I’m still awaiting responses from my follow-ups. Excitingly, I’ve discovered AI platforms that could match us with potential sponsors and will continue exploring this.
To reduce costs, I’ve had to drastically cut support days for coaches and managers. Previously, the project operated at about $5,000/month, covering payroll, travel, and accommodations. With just $8,000 left, we can only continue limited instruction to complete our study and posttesting without immediate funds.
Your support is critical—whether through donations or ideas for securing funding quickly. Together, we’ve created opportunities for thousands of Rwandan students and educators.
Thank you for standing with us.
Best regards,
Deborah

Camille's Report on Holiday Giving, Service, and Gratitude
In this season of gratitude, it is amazing what members of Southtowne do to help the local community.
Special Thanks:
- Pat Miller and Lonny King helped make December food boxes possible. We did a record 108 food boxes and had over 50 volunteers helping pack and deliver the boxes. We have benefited from several members bringing a friend to help.
-
Food for Lane County provided turkey breasts, gravy, mashed potatoes and stuffing for boxes
- The Mission provided whole turkeys, whole chickens and chocolates for the boxes.
-
Various Club Members who bought Turkey Bucks to make special requests for hams possible. We never know until the last minute what is meat and produce is possible. Thank you all for making these boxes have enough food stretch through winter break with kids home from school.
-
Cow Creek provided grant funds for these boxes.
- Lane County Health Council granted Southtowne a generous $14,500 for food boxes and food for homeless youth. We are very grateful!
-
We were also the benefactors of a $500 gift from Zippo logs and a $500 gift from an anonymous contributor.

New Member Recommendation - Dean Howarth
Dean has been attending meetings for several weeks, but due to the holidays, we weren't able to officially run his bio, info, and photo until now! Dean has already been volunteering for food boxes, and has participated in other Southtowne functions. He has listed his interests as, local, international, youth, and social!
We can now officially say that he is One Of Us! (after this runs for two weeks). WELCOME, DEAN!

Brilliant & Resilient | Celebrating the Power of Disabled Women Activists
Price: $29.95
This photography book by Eugene based Mobility International was mentioned by Jane Falls, Polio-Plus District 5110, during a recent Polio-Plus meeting, because many of the women featured are polio survivors. Many polio survivors experience the after effects of the acute illness with the onset many years later of post-polio syndrome (PPS).
This book recognizes the leadership and outstanding accomplishments of 50 disabled women activists from 41 countries.
