| SCHOLARSHIP CONVOCATION 2025

|
The Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA) hosted its annual Spring Scholarship Convocation Ceremony on April 10, 2025, at the Hall of Nations in the International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University. The event featured opening and closing remarks from Dean Upe Flueckiger and Scholarship Committee Chair Darrick Wade, AIA, along with student addresses by undergraduate speaker Adalyn Thomas and graduate speaker Kani Willis, who shared personal reflections on their academic journeys and the meaningful impact these scholarships provide to themselves and their peers.

This year, more than 60 students were recognized and awarded a combined total of $202,000 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year. Special honors included the Vitruvius Award, the Alberti Award, and the Student Leadership Award.
The Vitruvius Award, presented to Jylian Hanson, and the Alberti Award, presented to Jose De La Torre Garcia, recognized students who demonstrate exceptional respect for and understanding of architectural history. Both were presented by Dr. Brian Zugay.
The Design Leadership Alliance (DLA) Student Leadership Award was presented to graduate student Caleb Scott by President-Elect Lenora Ask. This award honors students who have shown outstanding leadership within the college community.

Congratulations to our scholarship recipients and award winners in Lubbock, El Paso, and Seville! We are deeply grateful to our generous donors, as well as to the faculty, staff, and students whose dedication made this celebration possible.

Research Assistant and PhD Candidate Sepideh Niknia, in the Land-use Planning, Management, and Design program, has published an article in the publication Proceedings of Divergence in Architectural Research at Georgia Tech University. Her article, titled "Manual Vs. Automated Window Blinds: Analysis of Energy Use Based on Climate Scenarios," discusses performance-driven sustainability.

Research Assistant and PhD Candidate Sepideh Niknia, in the Land-use Planning, Management, and Design program, presented part of her recent research study, "Optimizing Energy Performance in Educational Buildings: Insights from Post-Occupancy Evaluation and Retrofit Strategies," at the 2025 ARCC International Conference EMERGING CHALLENGES at the University of Maryland and Howard University.
This research evaluated the performance and comfort of four academic buildings on the TTU campus, including the Huckabee College of Architecture building.

Professor Joseph Aranha was invited to give a lecture, titled “Some Thoughts on Vernacular Architecture," at La Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Málaga, Spain on March 17, 2025, at the inauguration of an exhibit of his photographs titled “Celebration of Traditional Peoples and their Built Environments around the World.” The exhibit began on March 17 and ended on April 4, 2025. The exhibition, curated from images photographed by Professor Aranha over decades of research travels, depicted traditional architecture in India, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peru, Ethiopia, Thailand, Turkey, and Morocco.

Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan will be chairing Session S4, “Labor, Infrastructure, and the Built Environment in the U.S.,” at the upcoming III International Congress on Colonial and Post-Colonial Landscapes: Architecture, Colonialism and Labour, to be held February 11–13, 2026, at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon.
This session will explore the significant contributions of diverse labor forces to the development of American infrastructure and urban landscapes. Through both historical and contemporary perspectives, the session aims to broaden understanding of the diverse social, cultural, and political forces that have shaped the built environment in the United States.

Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan recently presented her research, titled “Towards Multispecies Justice in the City: Critical Diffraction of Urban Environments,” at the Science and Technology Studies (STS) Hub 2025: Diffracting the Critical conference, held in Berlin, Germany.
The conference focused on contemporary formations of critique across diverse themes, including ecologies, infrastructures, scales, temporalities, collaborations, and solidarities.
Dr. Mehan's work considered how multispecies justice can inform more inclusive and ecologically attuned urban environments.
