hear from Janelle Wellons!

Janelle graduated with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from MIT and recently started a new career as a Spaceflight Operations Engineer at a space company based in Tokyo, Japan.  She is working on developing operational procedures, testing space link communications and training to be Flight Director for real-time operations on an unmanned lunar mission in this new role.

Previously, Janelle worked at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory as an Instrument Operations Systems Engineer. Through her work she operated spacecraft and scientific instruments at Saturn, the Moon, and our own planet Earth. She was awarded the Bruce Murray Award for “inspiring students to engage in STEM, quenching their thirst for knowledge, and sparking a curiosity greater than the stars in the sky”.

When she isn’t working, you can find her exploring Japan, playing video games, watching anime, and doing outreach for communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM. Follow Janelle on her journey via her Instagram @itsjanellie or contact her via her website www.janellewellons.com.
