Longwood Reimagined Continues |
Using sustainable practices and systems is an important part of stewarding our Gardens and that commitment extends to our Longwood Reimagined project. To control temperatures in our new West Conservatory, we will be using a combination of techniques designed to reduce our dependence on conventional heating and cooling systems and minimize our carbon footprint. One such technique is the use of Earth Ducts, which are essentially buried ventilation ducts that pull in outdoor air and rely on ground temperatures to temper the air for heating and cooling.
We are completing the installation of 10 Earth Ducts, each 36-inches in diameter, nearly a football field in length, and equipped with a fan, evaporative cooler, and heating element. As the air travels through the ducts the soil surrounding the duct lowers the air temperature of incoming air during warm weather and raises the temperature of incoming air during cold weather. In more extreme weather conditions, the evaporative cooling units or heating coils can provide additional tempering. The Earth Ducts will enter the Conservatory at the basement level and be ventilated directly beneath the walkways on the display level. By ventilating at the walkway, our guests will benefit directly from the associated heating or cooling without the need to heat or cool the entire volume of the West Conservatory. The tempered fresh air will also help control humidity in the space, flushing out humid air through the vents in the Conservatory roof.
