This invigorating moderated roundtable conversation will highlight Black Excellence at sea and will include historical and contemporary Black maritime narratives. Through the voices of contemporary scholars and community members, the conversation will present a broad narrative of Black maritime experiences and perspectives and will help reshape the conversation about New England’s maritime histories. Black Maritime History Spotlight: Venture Smith

In honor of Black History Month, we highlight the life of Venture Smith, a Guinean man enslaved in Stonington in the mid-1700s, whose autobiographical account is one of the earliest firsthand accounts of slavery in American history, detailing both hardship and brutality, and his perseverance in gaining freedom for himself and his family.
Smith's account is read and discussed in WM’s American Maritime History class, taught by Dr. Sofia Zepeda, demonstrating how he and others who shared his fate have contributed to this country’s complex, multi-faceted relationship to the sea. Smith experienced not only the Middle Passage across the Atlantic, but also life aboard a whaling vessel, in New England fishing boats, and sailing from Stonington to Fishers Island and Long Island to find jobs so he could buy his freedom.
His story, A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture, a Native of Africa: But Resident above Sixty Years in the United States of America, Related by Himself remains a vital piece of early American and New England history.

S23 Offshore Field Seminar Goes Swimmingly
| |
One week into the semester, the Class of Spring 2023 embarked on an adventure of a lifetime, traveling to St. Croix and becoming crew members aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer. This semester’s Offshore Field Seminar boasted phenomenal weather, countless sea creature sightings, lots of poetry, and a group of intrepid students who carried on WM’s legacy of offshore excellence.
Thank you to Chief Scientist Tim Pusack and the rest of the WM team for leading another unforgettable offshore experience, as well as to the captain, crew, scientists, engineers and stewards aboard Cramer for their continued support.

Happy Birthday, Jim Carlton!
| |
On February 15, Williams-Mystic celebrated the 75th birthday of Marine Ecologist and Director Emeritus Jim Carlton.
While we are happy to celebrate Jim just about every day, his recent birthday gave our team the opportunity to reflect on the decades he has dedicated to our program and the countless lives he has touched in the process. Happy birthday, Jim!
