Miller & the Nobel Prize, Mike Nesmith, Bob Dylan, and more!
Miller & the Nobel Prize, Mike Nesmith, Bob Dylan, and more!

Oh, why hello!

We didn't see you over there. How's it going? Good? Good.
We're good too. Thanks for asking.
Indeed, the Henry Miller LAB in Carmel is easing into a busy Indian Summer, while staff at the Mothership in Big Sur, open Thursday-Sunday, is tending to blissed-out hikers gorging on Saul's tacos* and swooning over Jack and Alice (one of whom is pictured above.)
But enough about us! Let's line'em up!

Henry's campaign for the Nobel Prize...

On Sept 8 and 9 we're having a "Dylan and Dylan" weekend in Carmel celebrating Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas, and it got us thinking.
The former, of course, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He also said, in 1977, "I like Henry Miller. I think he's the greatest American writer."
Did you know that a year after Bob's accolade, Henry himself launched a campaign to lobby the Swedish Academy for the very same prize?** It's true.

Dylan (Thomas) on Henry: Gentle, mellow, gay

The Welsh poet also had nice things to say about the Bard of Partington Ridge. In fact, he even crashed with Henry in Big Sur! (Oh, to be a fly on the wall that evening....)
Thomas wrote about it to his wife Cailtin. Check out this excerpt, courtesy of the latest issue of Nexus, the International Henry Miller Journal!

The HML hosts Mike Nesmith (!) in Sand City!

Last week we had the honor of hosting Mike Nesmith*** at the West End celebration in Sand City.
Mike spoke with Magnus about his career, his connection with the Central Coast, and his excellent new memoir, "Infinite Tuesday." Proceeds from book sales went to the Library.
It was an amazing event. If you missed it, fear not. Check out the next best things.
First, Mike's pre-event chat with KAZU's Dylan Music here and second, photos from the festivities here!
(And thanks again, Mike! Let's hang soon!!)

Glamour comes to Carmel! (Not a typo!)

Head's up: On September 3rd and 10th, we'll be holding the gala finales of the 11th annual Big Sur International Short Film Screening Series at the LAB!
We received over 1,500 short film submissions from around the globe. We whittled the list down to 48 and screened them over the summer.
On both nights we'll be screening the "Best of the Best" as selected by our illustrious jury which includes Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and Kirsten Dunst!
Next month we will let you know the winners!!!

"Marilyn Monroe didn't marry Henry Miller" (right?)

The photo above will probably make a few of you do a double-take.
The confusion between Henry and Arthur Miller is, of course, well-documented and pervasive. Our great pal Dan Bern was hip to the confusion all the way back in 1997.
He wrote a song about it, and in the process, created the "unofficial" song of the Henry Miller Library. Dig it!

Be part of our Dylan tribute REMOTELY!!!

On Friday, Sept. 8, we're having a crowdsourced tribute / open mic to Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas in Carmel.

We're asking folks to tell us what Dylan Thomas and/or Bob Dylan means to them. (Just like the Boss, below!)

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN.

Submit your tribute REMOTELY and join the party! Record* a performance, a "confessional," or an audio file, and send it to magnus@henrymiller.org.

We'll screen or play it on Friday!

* use your iPhone, your neighbors hi-Def, your laptop & send it!  (-:

"Get Covered 2" Homeless Benefit: A recap!

On August 27th, the LAB was home to "Get Covered 2," a full days worth of music to help protect Monterey County's homeless from excessive exposure to the sun.
"We raised 192 hats for the homeless!" said organizer Stuart Thornton. "That will help protect a lot of the local homeless from the sun!"
Check out the final act below, an all-star jam**** featuring members of the Suborbitals, The Shoobies, The Proudest Monkeys, Valley Soul, and Vincent Randazzo!

Final wrap! The Big Sur Fashion Show...

Elsa over at the Big Sur Fashion Show says: "We are proud to announce that the full accounting for the Fashion Show has been wrapped up and we were able to donate......(drum roll please!)

* It's a shame it took a bridge to fail and fall for there to be affordable authentic tacos in Big Sur! Click here and scroll down.
** Spoiler alert: He didn't win! :(
