Welcome to the final edition of Poultry@Sydney for 2023!

This edition will include details of the recent Univeristy of Sydney "Poultry Eductaion Day"; an interview with Dr Ron MacAlpine; and a timely reminder to register for for the upcoming Australian Poultry Science Symposium. We'd also like to take this oppurtunity to wish all of our subscribers, Poultry Research Foundation members and all of our Poultry Family from around the world, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe Holiday Season.

Australian Poultry Science Symposium 2024

The 35th Australian Poultry Science Symposium (APSS) will be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Sydney Hyde Park, between 19-21 February 2024. The central theme of APSS 2024 will be "Frontier Science - Integrating Nutrition, Gut Health and Welfare". There will feature outstanding speakers from across the world, covering all aspects of poultry science over an exciting 2.5 days of conference. The conference program will officially start at 12 noon on Monday the 19th and conclude at 4.30pm on Wednesday the 21st. The conference will have no concurrent sessions so that the delegates can appreciate the array of potential problems and solutions befitting the complexity of issues faced by the poultry industry today.

“Poultry Education Day” for School Students

On the 10th of November 2023, The University of Sydney held the egg-citing open day once again whereby students across all parts of NSW local and further way were invited into the world of poultry. On this day, the Poultry Research Foundation (PRF) was able to showcase what goes into one of the largest contributors to the Australian food basket, consumable poultry products they may interact with daily. A chat with industry leader and nutrition expert, Dr Ron MacAlpine

Dr Ron MacAlpine is a highly respected industry leader and a well-known poultry nutritionist in Australia. It was a pleasure for PRF's Christine Clark to have a chat with Ron recently.

After completing a degree in Rural Science at UNE in 1972 Ron joined Inghams. At this time Inghams was the leading broiler producing company in Australia. There were no technical advisors in the feed and nutrition role, so someone out of university could join the industry without experience (they only needed interest and drive). With some experience under his belt, several years later he completed a PhD in amino acid nutrition of Australian broiler chickens in 1980. Find out more...

POULTRY NETWORK

THE UK’s Animal Welfare Committee has published a new report examining the practice of male chick culling.

In particular, the research looks at new technologies that can determine the sex of fertilised eggs before hatcht also considers the animal welfare implications of ending male chick culling, given that they are an important food source for captive raptors. And it examines the climate cost of incubating male chicks for them to be culled after hatching.
