A Common Cholesterol Drug May Weaken Ovarian Cancer Spread
Duke Cancer Institute researchers have uncovered how fluid buildup in advanced ovarian cancer helps tumors survive and spread, pointing to a potential new treatment strategy. The study shows that lipids in this fluid protect cancer cells from dying, but an existing cholesterol drug, bezafibrate, may help break down that protection and make tumors more responsive to treatment. While still in early stages, the findings highlight a new way to target the tumor’s environment rather than the cancer cells alone. This approach could ultimately improve treatment options for patients with advanced ovarian cancer.
