208 students from 31 countries joined NYU Shanghai’s Study Away Programs this fall semester, one of the largest cohorts of study away students on campus in recent years. Most of the students came from NYU in New York, with 11 from NYU Abu Dhabi. A record 18 visiting students from other universities also made up the cohort.

🗨️ Congratulations to Zhu Liuliu ’24 who won the 2026 Talent Prize at the Pax Art Awards in Switzerland. The award supports emerging artists as they launch their professional careers by fostering the development of digital arts. The jury highlighted Liuliu’s work’s engagement with contemporary issues of inclusion and accessibility, as well as its strong potential to make a significant impact on the digital art scene.Â
🗨️ The Cheenapara Heritage Gallery opened this month in Kolkata, India, preserving more than 200 years of Chinese history in the city’s Old Chinatown. The project is the result of a collaboration between the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, the All India Chinese Association, the CHA (Cities, Heritage, Architecture) Project, conservation architect Sohini Pyne, and Center for Global Asia Director Tansen Sen. The gallery was funded in part by a British Academy grant received by the Center for Global Asia, in addition to funds from the NYU Shanghai Boost Fund.

Color, games, and a little bit of magic took over campus at the second annual Farnival x QilinFEST! Hosted by Human Resources in collaboration with Student Affairs, this year’s Color Fun celebration brought the NYU Shanghai community together for a day of water games, VR rides, dancing, live Tetris, magic, food, and plenty of colorful chaos.

A new study by NYU Abu Dhabi researchers has found that portraying women scientists in virtual reality can reduce people’s default association of science with men. The study concludes this could potentially help to alter perceptions of science as a “traditionally male domain.”

NYU Shanghai is establishing The Global Institute for Longevity and Resilience as an interdisciplinary platform anchored in Shanghai, rooted in China, focused on Asia, and globally connected through NYU. To mark the Institute’s establishment, NYU Shanghai will host four parallel thematic forums and the Institute’s official inauguration on September 17, bringing together distinguished scholars, policy and practice leaders, and industry experts from China and around the world under the theme “Advancing Healthy Longevity. Building Resilient Societies.”
