Dear Kanonkop Wine Friends

The year 2020 will forever remind me of how resilient one can be – and more so our team on Kanonkop. Despite COVID-19 and all the ups and downs, one major message to all on Kanonkop was “no knee jerks!” and how well everyone accepted this as the “new norm”.

Going into the festive season I would like to quote my grandfather, Paul Sauer: “Don’t be intimidated by the pretentiousness of those who purport to be wine connoisseurs. Please, do not allow them to get in your way and do not allow the snobs to terrorise you. Do not become obsessed with the ‘right’ wine. Decide for yourself what a good wine tastes like. For you, the best wine is the wine that tastes best, and to hell with the rest.”

To which I would like to add: “Do you go to the opera as a graduate of music, or just a lover of music?”

New Release - Black Label Pinotage 2018

The annual release of the famed Black Label Pinotage was celebrated recently at four special events - two on Kanonkop and one each in Pretoria and Johannesburg. As is the custom, the "kanon" (cannon) was fired and a replica handed out in recognition of the person / company that contributed the most to Kanonkop's success over the past year.

This year the award went to our UK importer, Seckford Agencies! Since taking over the importing, distribution and sales of our wines in the UK towards the back end of 2018, they have done an incredible job to boost our presence and increase sales.

A single Pinotage vineyard planted in 1953 is the birthplace of this prized red wine. The majestic old vines offer small berries with extremely concentrated flavours. After fermentation, the wine is placed in new French oak barrels where it ages for 18 months prior to bottling. Dense with dark fruit and black cherry, the wine is sleek and muscular with a luxurious and beguiling presence on the palate. Eminently accessible, this regal wine will age magnificently for many years.

Platter's Guide 2021

We are proud to announce that two of our wines, the Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 and Paul Sauer 2017, were awarded the coveted Platter's Guide 5 stars for the 2021 edition. This is the second year in a row that both of these wines received this prestigious accolade, and further cements our reputation as one of the top producers of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet based blends in South Africa.

The forthcoming Strauss & co Fine Wine Auction will focus on Bordeaux-style wines, and will feature a vertical Paul Sauer lot originating from our own vinothèque.

The auction, which will be conducted online only, starts at 08h00 on Monday 16 November 2020 and finishes at 20h00 on Monday 23 November 2020.
