Dear Friend:

It has been an emotional roller coaster around the Gallagher campaign the last few days.

  1. Friday, May 30: My opponent, Rep. Meigs, announced her retirement during the Sine Die (last official day) session of the Kansas House, making the 23rd District an “open” seat with no incumbent. We were very excited, but then anxious because most incumbents don’t leave office without a hand-picked successor to run in their place. Who would it be?
               *  A Democrat had already filed to run in the general election (November), but the Republican primary was a more immediate challenge.
  2. Sunday, June 1: I was walking doors in the Greystone West neighborhood, paying attention to the door-to-door app on my phone (and not the elevation of the sidewalk) and took a tumble. I’m fine, though sore and scratched up, as is my phone. BUT, there’s one thing that certainly put the spring back in my step…
  3. Monday, June 2: The deadline to file for legislative offices was noon on Monday. I got the call shortly after noon that NO ONE had filed in the Republican primary. Relief and elation, if one can experience those two at once.

With the filing deadline behind me, and a general election in November, I can focus on helping a number of other new candidates with their races. I participated in the Old Shawnee Days Parade and will be in the Lenexa parade at 10 am on Friday, July 4th. If you’re in town, we will need your help. I have t-shirts for volunteers and we’ll grab pizza afterward. Here are a few photos of Saturday's soggy supporters

One Eye On Topeka

It’s still a long time and a big election hurdle before I get there, but what happens in Topeka is of critical importance to this election and certainly the 2015 legislative session. The last two months have been disastrous for Kansas’ financial outlook. State revenues have fallen more than $300 million short of estimates, meaning the state budgeted for $300M more than it will have, come June 30, and that doesn’t take into account June spending. Fortunately, the state maintained a healthy ending balance to cushion against something like this, but that’s only a one-time fix. More cuts will have to come in order for next year to break even.

Vote August 5th!

Just because I do not have opposition in the Republican primary election, doesn’t mean you don’t have to vote! A number of statewide and county offices also have primary elections:

Secretary of State: This one will be interesting if only because current Secretary of State Kris Kobach has received quite a bit of national attention for his work on immigration issues throughout the country. Scott Morgan, a Lawrence attorney and former staffer for U.S. Senators Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum, is challenging Kobach in the August primary.

Insurance Commissioner: FIVE candidates will square off in this primary election for the position vacated by 3-term Commissioner Sandy Praeger. The candidates are:

  1. Clark Shultz (Lindsborg): State Representative and Chairman of the House Insurance Committee, he is endorsed by Praeger. Website
  2. Ken Selzer (Leawood):Website
  3. David Powell (El Dorado): Website
  4. Beverly Gossage (Eudora): Website
  5. John Toplikar (Olathe): Website

Chair of the Johnson County Commission: Ed Eilert, the longtime Mayor of Overland Park and current Chair, is running for re-election, and 1st District Commissioner Ed Peterson and former Representative Patricia Lightner are challenging him.

Johnson County Commissioners: Click here to find your Commission District.

1st District Johnson County Commissioner: Those in northeast Johnson County and down State Line through Leawood will have a 4-way primary:

  1. Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer
  2. Mission Mayor Laura McConwell
  3. Rachel Sciolaro (Leawood)
  4. V. Alex DiCarlo (Prairie Village)
  5. Mark Nauser (Leawood)

4th District Johnson County Commissioner:

  1. Jason Osterhaus (incumbent)
  2. Overland Park Councilman Curt Skoog
  3. Mayre Macey Hoffman (Overland Park)

That’s all for now, I look forward to connecting with you in the coming weeks as I continue to walk door-to-door, gaining support for my candidacy in November.
