40th Annual Auction a smashing success

The 40th Annual Auction and Ruby Gala was a huge hit Friday night at the Evangelical Reformed Church.

Money was raised for our S.T.E.M. programs, delicious food provided by our very own Kim Young was consumed, incredible service by a host of student volunteers, auctioneer Larry Snyder was as enthusiastic as ever, friendships were rekindled and the chance to support the best school in the South Sound was taken by many.

We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

I would be remiss if I didn't give an immense shoutout to Auction Chair Sue Ellen Rush and her Assistant Chair Sara Halverson (who moonlights as the SCA Controller/Head of Maintenance and Facilities/Human Resources/Finance Chair/And other Duties As Assigned) for putting together an incredible event and basically pulling it off in less than two weeks.

We are so blessed at Sound Christian Academy to have wonderful workers and these two take the cake.

Thank you again to everyone who participated - whether by donation, purchasing, setup, teardown or just prayerful support.

Grandparents Assembly is Tuesday!

Our annual Grandparents Assembly will be from 9-10am on Tuesday, March 28 and you won't want to miss it.

There will be photo booths and snacks provided afterward. All grandparents are invited to come hang out with their students and participate in this fun event.

We hope to see you there!

Open enrollment begins April 1, so you have less than two weeks to take advantage of our re-enrollment discounts.

We anticipate the elementary school to fill up very quickly, so don't miss out on keeping your student at SCA!

Remember The Alamo!

Five separate high school subjects put on a Remember The Alamo event this week and it was a multi-discipline event that is likely to continue with different subjects in years to come.

The event was the culmination of a literature, history, pottery, biology and spanish class cooperation to study this historical event from many different angles and ultimately present it to the rest of the high school student body at a lunch event Wednesday.

Mr. Omli’s Concurrent American Literature class looked at a Walt Whitman poem that refers to the Alamo and discusses the Goliad, which was another difficult battle.
U.S. History with Ms. Welch looked at the Alamo within the greater context of the Texan Revolution and the Mexican American War.
Ms. Keller’s Pottery class created sculptures of animals that would have been surrounding the Alamo at the time of the battle.
Mr. Saldajeno lectured his Biology students on the effects of starvation on cells (due to tthe struggle with food supplies during the siege).
Spanish 1 studied the timeline of the battle and of people connected to the Alamo.
Spanish 2 looked at music and paintings that were inspired by the Alamo. They also considered the animals surrounding the Alamo and the sounds that they would have heard before, during, and after the battle. They were also in charge of creating the Alamo walls in the library.
Spanish 3 examined the historical context and perspectives of both Americans and Mexicans during and after the siege of the Alamo. They also wrote and performed brief, dramatic representations of Alamo military leaders and family members of fallen soldiers.

All three classes chose verses from God’s word to help us with our perspective in the face of all that took place at the Alamo.

Our overall theme was: Let’s remember the Alamo with thoughtfulness and faith. And, whatever we face in life, let’s remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead (2 Tim. 2:8).

We've had a number of students hanging out on campus after school lets out lately and if they are not in a sport or activity, they need to head home within 30 minutes of school letting out.

Limited space left for Spring Break trips

Before and After School Care (BASC) will offer four field trips during Spring Break and will be open all five days.

Space is limited to 22 students and students must be currently enrolled to attend.

Field trips include: Point Defiance Zoo and Aquariam, Tacoma Nature Center, Fort Lewis Military Museum and Pierce College Science Dome.

Be a good neighbor

You know those little plastic signs people put up in their neighborhood to try and get drivers to slow down? Am I the only one that speeds up when they see those?

Anyway, our school - as you all know - is located in the middle of a neighborhood. The speed limit in said neighborhood is 25 mph. In school zones, it is 20 mph. We do not have an official school zone designation, but it would be great if we pretended we did and slowed it down a bit in the neighborhood on the way into and out of the school.

If you want to show off how fast your minivan can go maybe try out for a beginner's night at the local speedway?
