JUST WAIT AND SEE, CHARLIE BROWN Puget Sound’s Tour and Travel Committee sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest in what is now known as Wheelock Student Center on Thursday, Oct. 26, 1978. Making an appearance as The Great Pumpkin was President Philip Phibbs, who “gave a short speech, presented Dean [Tom] Davis with his very own security blanket, then threw candies to the crowd,” according to the Nov. 3, 1978, issue of The Trail. The contest was won by the Learning Skills Center, early predecessor to what is now the Center for Writing and Learning.
