We will have a variety of service opportunities and educational opportunities featuring community partners on and off campus to draw attention to the issues of hunger and houselessness. Some events will even have food! Be sure to check them out below!

Solve city cleanup (SYC *Short*)
When: Thursday nov 13
10:30am - 12:00pm
Location: We will meet at the Hub for Service & Sustainability (m103) in the Smith Memorial Student Union at 10:30 AM.
What: Looking to meet others, get outside, and support our city? Join the Student Community Engagement Center for a special Serve Your City cleanup event in partnership with SOLVE! Together will take action to beautify PSU’s campus and surrounding neighborhoods, removing litter, microplastics, all while raising awareness about environmental sustainability.

Week long event: Book Drive For Street booksThe Student Community Engagement Center is teaming up with Street Books, a one-of-a-kind, bicycle-powered library that brings books directly to Portland’s unhoused community. Together, we’re hosting a book drive to help expand access to reading and connection for everyone.
Locations:
- Room m103 – Hub for Service & Sustainability
- Room m113 – SALP Clubhouse
(Both on the first-floor mezzanine)
- UNST Cramer Lounge Room 17
- Urban building third floor lounge
- Smith lounge
Anyone who takes a photo of themselves donating and tags us on instagram or emails us a picture to volunteer@pdx.edu. Will be entered to win a water bottle stuffed with goods! Winners will be announced 11/17 and 11/21

Sort and Pack Donations with the Oregon Food Bank
When: Monday, November 17th, 1:30pm-3:30pm
Where: Oregon Food Bank, 7900 NE 33rd Dr
f you need a ride, we will be meeting in the Smith Memorial Student Union at 1:00 p.m. If you dont need a ride arrive by 1:30 pm.
What: Looking for a hands-on way to make a difference? Join us as we volunteer with the Oregon Food Bank! The Oregon Food Bank seeks to eliminate hunger and its root causes through collecting and distributing food across Oregon and Southwest Washington During this project, volunteers will assist with ongoing tasks such as sorting canned and boxed food donations into categories, repacking and labeling bulk food items into family-size portions, and culling and sorting produce.

Housing and Food Insecurity at PSU: Understanding the Challenge When: Tuesday, November 18th, 12:45pm-1:45pm
Where: Smith Memorial Student Union Room 338
What: Join us for an engaging and educational presentation with Jacen Greene, co-founder and Assistant Director of Portland State University’s Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative. Drawing on his expertise in social innovation and community research, Jacen will guide students through a deeper understanding of housing and food insecurity—issues that affect many PSU students today.

Craft Cards for homebound Seniors in Collaboration with the PSU Library
When: Wednesday, November 19, 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Where: Millar library.
We will be meeting in the Sandbox, located on the first floor of the library, to the right, next to the printing station.
What: We will begin our time together with a short explanation and discussion about Meals on Wheels and the work they do in the community to support our elderly neighbors. Then the rest of the hour will be spent crafting and writing cards together. Art supplies will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own to use. You are welcome to draw, paint, write a letter or create anything you feel inspired to make - these crafts will be greatly appreciated by the seniors.

Housing and Belonging - A Community Conversation with Oregon Humanities
When: Thursday, November 20, 4:30pm-6:00pm
Where: SMSU Room 333, Portland State University
What: Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on housing and belonging, facilitated by community organizer Julia Water as part of Oregon Humanities' Conversation Project during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. This 90-minute session will dive into the visible and divisive issues surrounding housing and homelessness that are prevalent in media, politics, and across Oregon’s communities.

Sort Household Donations at Community Warehouse
When: Friday, November 21st, 5:00pm-7:00pm
Where: Community Warehouse, 3961 NE MLK Blvd
We’ll meet in Smith Memorial Student Union at 4:30 p.m. before taking the #6 bus together. Volunteers meeting on-site can go directly to Community Warehouse
What: Looking for a hands-on way to make a difference? Join us as we volunteer with Community Warehouse, a local nonprofit that partners with over 200 agencies to provide essential household furnishings to more than 7,500 individuals and families across NW Oregon and SW Washington each year. During this project, volunteers will assist with ongoing tasks such as bundling silverware, sorting linens, assembling furniture, and other warehouse needs

This Week's Project Spotlight:
Help with the Hanfu Fashion Show at Holgate Library!
Community Partner: Multnomah County Library
Where: 7905 SE Holgate Blvd., Portland, OR 97206. The event is indoors.
What: We are looking for volunteers to support the Hanfu Fashion Show on Wednesday, November 19 at Holgate Library. There is also an optional rehearsal on Wednesday, November 12. Hanfu, the artistic quintessence of Chinese traditional culture, shows a diverse range of ethnic personalities. Hanfu has inspired fashion and is actively integrated into modern people's daily lives.
