New Board Chair
Congratulations to Trustee Robin Pilkey, who was acclaimed as the new Chair of the TDSB in August. Robin is knowledgeable, fair and dedicated to the education of Toronto’s children. Trustees across the TDSB believe Robin is the perfect choice to steer the board. To read her remarks click here: http://goo.gl/NBMGrc
Special Congratulations To Go Green Cricket Project At Valley Park M.S.

Green Cricket received a grant of $258,301.00 from the federal Canada 150 Fund - thanks John. The money will be used to install LED sports lights as well as a digital scoreboard.

These funds will help complete this comprehensive community initiative that is helping to transform and re-energize the entire area. We have amazing athletic youth in our community and they have terrific coaches.

Labour News
All teachers’ federations across the province, except the Elementary Teacher’s Federation, have settled their contracts in this round of discussion.   Ontario’s public elementary teachers will begin one-day, rotating strikes across t
he province in October unless the government and school boards return to the bargaining table and progress is made, says a confidential bulletin sent to members. In the meantime, they’re going to refuse to do extracurricular activities mid-week — on “Wynne Wednesdays,” performing classroom duties only while “wearing a solidarity colour, their ETFO (union) buttons, shirts or caps, says the memo outlining the ramped-up job action. In addition, starting Monday, teachers have been directed not to update classroom websites or blogs — key ways in which many communicate with parents — and won’t provide comments or prepare fall progress report cards, which are distributed in late October or early November.
I will be keeping you up-to-date with additional information. You can also check the main page of the TDSB website. There you will find all the news as it comes to us. Go to: www.tdsb.on.ca

Federal Elections – Federal Questions About Education
The education of students in elementary and secondary school is a provincial and local responsibility. However there are issues that reside with the federal government that impact our students, schools and communities. If you talk with a federal candidate, or are at an all-candidates’ debate below are some questions you might ask:
Federal Responsibility
 Questions related to our schools
 Employment – Jobs, Skill Development
What additional resources will your party put towards apprenticeship programs, training programs, training and skill development for youth etc? Unemployment is highest among Canada’s youth.
 Immigration
Will your party support funding or increasing funding for settlement workers in the schools to help new immigrants adapt to their new country? Will your party increase English As a Second Language funding to support our students who first language is not English? Increased language skills will improve their chances to obtain work.
 Health
Will your party support nutrition programs in schools?
 Children 0 to 6
Will you support healthy baby clinics and programs, fund child care programs, support young families?
 Infrastructure
Currently Canada will provide $$ for ice rinks and community centres, why not schools? In many communities they are the heart of the neighbourhoods, and are used in the evening and weekends by adults, and service organizations. Will you work to support schools as an infrastructure responsibility?
 Public Safety
What resources can you provide for anti-bullying, safe schools, safe communities?

Special Needs Children Need Special Attention

If you are a parent with a child with special needs check our website to answer some of your questions www.tdsb.on.ca/EarlyYears/SpecialEducation.aspx

There is also a committee of the Board called the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) which consists of parents and service organizations.

We have special education programs in every school in our ward and two schools - Sunny View and Park Lane dedicated to children who have considerable physical and cognitive challenges.

A Word or Two (or more) about the Sex Education
A small part of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum
The Thornliffe Park area of our city has been in the media the last week or so because of a boycott by parents against the new provincial sex curriculum. I have been a Trustee representing our community for many years and I am acutely aware of the hopes and dreams that parents have for their children.  Country of origin, social-ecomomic background, achieved level of education plays no role in what parent aspire for their children.  All parents want their children to grow up to be successful in school and to have healthy relationships that lead to a successful lives.

The TDSB  works hard to make sure the adults who work with children carry out this goal. Teachers and principals are sensitive to our communities - the concerns of parents as well as the sophistication of their students - and they are well aware of their repsonsiblity as professionals.  I ask those who have kept their children home to allow the teachers to meet with you and talk about the new Sex Education curriculum from the province. If your children stay home from school you could be putting your children’s success in school at risk.

Do You Have Questions about the Health and Physical Education Curriculum? Before the curriculum is taught, our principals will be available to parents to discuss how the sexual component will be presented in your child’s school. Remember the sexual health section is a very small component of a much larger curriculum and will consist of 3-5 lessons the entire year.

Also of interest may be the comparison with the sexual education curriculum in other provinces click here

School Councils – a key part of every healthy school
Most of you know that School councils are a great way for you to get involved in your child’s education. Every school in our community has an elected school council.  These councils can help you stay on top of all the opportunities and resources available.  And it is a fabulous network where you can meet new friends and share and learn together.  Your school council is an important forum for involving all members of the school community in matters that affect the education of students.  If you are already a member of your school council, that is terrific. If you aren’t, please think about making this the year to join and if you know of a parent new to the school – invite them along. Some parents just need a friendly invite to get started.

Harrison PS Kindergarten Playground Project Is Complete!

And WOW is it fabulous! Everyone involved worked hard to create an outdoor play space to meet the needs of young children with a range of abilities and provide opportunities for large motor development, exploration and play. This new space has a tricycle pathway, seating rocks, large tractor tires & rock slope for climbing, 2 hill slides, storage shed with a chalk wall and trees and shrubs.

Thanks for coming back to help us celebrate the opening Mrs. Riccirdelli.
TDSB's Summer Language Program
What a great summer for our Summer Language Program!  2,000+ elementary school students enrolled in international language and culture classes in 17 different languages classes held at 12 different sites across the city.

Classes are funded by the Ministry of Education and there is no cost for students to enroll.  Students spend the morning developing reading and writing in a language and in the afternoon learn about the culture behind the language.  In addition to gaining knowledge of the global world these classes help students keep cognitive skills, such as learning and attention sharp throughout the summer, as well as increase their vocabulary.

Overland Learning Centre – Our Own Community Gem
We are blessed to have Overland Learning Centre in our community.  Overland provides ESL classes for adults, general interest and skill and job training courses, and more. And in 2013 learners and staff teamed up with a local food bank, Community Share Food Bank, to transform a strip of land between their buildings into garden beds.  For two years they have produced edible crops to fight hunger through this community garden. Their first harvest in June produced a bounty.
