A warm hello to our Denison family!
Parents and Families
We are thrilled to have your student join us on campus this fall. As you and your student transition into life at Denison, we will send you occasional emails with timely family news and information to help your student thrive.

Notice: Reminder of upcoming deadlines
A friendly reminder that there are many upcoming deadlines including June Orientation Registration and August Pre-Orientation Registration. The deadline to apply for the August Pre-Orientations (DAO, DCO, DMO, DOO, and DSO) has been extended to May 22. June Orientation registrations should be submitted as soon as possible, however we will continue to accept registrations as long as space is available. We have also extended the deadline for the personal data/advising form to May 24. Students will need their login credentials to submit their health forms and housing form. Students will find this information in a letter located inside the front pocket of their First-Year Notebook. Health forms are to be submitted within 30 days from the date you receive your MyDenison username and password. Housing applications are due on June 1. Please encourage your student to review the Form Deadlines to ensure they have completed the appropriate forms on time.

June Orientation
We look forward to seeing many of your students on campus for June Orientation. If you are attending with your student, we hope you take some time to get to know the campus and our hometown of Granville. Don’t miss the Parent and Family Reception on the evening of Day 1 at 8:30 p.m. in the Faculty Common in Burton Morgan. This is a good opportunity to relax at the end of the day and connect with other Denison family members. We hope to see you there.

Advising Circles
As your student thinks about their first-semester classes, we encourage them to sign up for an Advising Circle, or AC 101. In this one-credit course, each group of 10 to 12 first-year students meets with their faculty advisor and a peer mentor. They discuss a wide range of topics that lead them to a fuller understanding of life at college and the Denison community. The class meets once a week during the fall semester and once a month over the spring semester. Students have found it to be very helpful as they transition to life at Denison.
Thoughts from a Denison family member:
“I was impressed when Denison instituted and explained Advising Circles to me prior to my daughter’s arrival on campus her first year. During that first fall semester, I asked her how school was going several times, and it was clear to me in her stories that her AC was helping her transition successfully to college life. Advising Circles offer opportunities to share common experiences, challenges, ask questions, and build personal connections. I must say I was actually a bit envious of her — I would have really benefitted from something like this at my college.” — David Ross, Denison Parent

Healthy transition for students with continuing care needs
College is a time for students to develop personal agency and take ownership of their education, health, and wellness. To support students in these efforts, Denison has a variety of resources available. For students with a history of medical concerns, behavioral health issues, or physical or learning accessibility needs, now is the time to have an important conversation about their continuing care. You and your student should develop a plan to use the many great resources provided by the college and to consider whether it is necessary to identify resources in the Granville community as well.
To support the holistic health and well-being of students, The Whisler Center for Student Wellness offers a wide range of services by highly trained, experienced and licensed physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, counselors, and clinical social workers. Students who use medication should plan in advance for prescription renewals while away from their home provider.
You may find helpful a resource titled Starting the Conversation: College and Your Mental Health, published by The National Association for Mental Health and The JED Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that supports the emotional and mental health of teens and young adults. JED also has published Set to Go, a transition of care guide for families.
The Academic Resource Center offers a wide range of services for all students, including peer tutoring, the “Launch into Learning” academic skills building series, and general time management/study strategy consultations by appointment. If your student requires reasonable accommodations at Denison based on a disability, they should contact the Academic Resource Center to discuss their specific need and how to submit current documentation.
We are looking forward to partnering with you and supporting your student as they continue to develop independence in college.
