Checking into SXSW
When Hurricane Ventures launched in September, one of its initial investments was in SkinCheck, a skin cancer detection app started by University of Tulsa computer science/cyber security senior Julian Abhari and MBA student Daniel Marques. Now, SkinCheck is headed to South by Southwest (SXSW), as one of
45 finalists for the 16th annual SXSW Pitch Competition. “It is truly an honor that this passion project I was building when I was 16 years old programming in my bedroom has grown to become a cutting-edge technology that is changing the world for the better,” Abhari said.

Home Is Where the Art Is
A new executive director for Gilcrease Museum has been named:
Brian Lee Whisenhunt. A Tulsa native, Whisenhunt has decades of experience, most recently as executive director of The Rockwell Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, located in Corning, New York. “The experiences I had at Gilcrease as a young person are key not just to who I am as a museum professional, but also as a person,” Whisenhunt said. “I am ecstatic to return to my hometown.” He will begin his duties on April 15.

Out Of the House, Into the Lab
Every other Wednesday, 12 home-schooled students from the Tulsa area gather to gain hands-on experience in a physics lab
in The University of Tulsa’s Keplinger Hall. These students are all part of the Classical Conversations Curriculum, based out of Asbury United Methodist Church in Tulsa, and the program, now in its second year, has been a tremendous success. In addition to working in the labs, the students are exposed to TU’s beautiful campus,
with the hope that they will feel less intimidated by the prospect of college and be inspired to further their education.
