LPI to Host 'Collateral Damage: When Politics Block Justice'
The Loyola Project for the Innocent will host the lunch talk, Collateral Damage: When Politics Block Justice, from 12-1 p.m. on April 16 in Courtroom of the '90s. The event will feature a discussion with Christopher Dunn and his lawyer, Rachel Wester, on the politicization of a criminal case. Dunn was exonerated after 30-plus years in prison in the state of Missouri. In 2020, a judge acknowledged that new evidence proved his innocence, but that under Missouri law, only death row inmates could get a conviction overturned based on actual innocence. The law changed the next year, and the local prosecutor filed a motion to exonerate him, which was granted. That’s when the Missouri attorney general (AG) stepped in and appealed the release, kicking off a legal battle that’s still ongoing. Notably, the AG is facing a primary challenge from a former attorney of President Trump, and it has been alleged the AG is using the case to demonstrate that he is tough on crime.
