Educational, Professional, and Internship Opportunities

The Fine Arts Center 4th floor will be closed for renovations until fall 2020, so be sure to remove all of your items from the lockers and classrooms, or risk losing them. There are signs posted throughout both the SAB and FAC, as well as emails going out to student's UMass email accounts.

Reminder, EH&S mandatory training will take place Friday, January 24, SAB 240, for new undergrad studio holders. Anyone planning to use the laser cutter in the spring 20 semester, must have laser training.  Laser training will take place on the 24th, along with EH&S training. Any questions, contact Sandy Hay at sandy@art.umass.edu.

Hampden Gallery

Three exhibitions will take place at Hampden Gallery, Including a show featuring the work Christine Texiera, Release the Moorings, who will offer a paint workshop on Sunday, 2/9. Register below.

Pour and More: A one day workshop led by Christine Texiera:
Sunday, February 9, 2:30 - 4:30 pm

Learn Christine’s paint pouring technique, how to prepare a panel, mix paint & mediums, pour and complete a painting. Materials will be provided however participants are encouraged to bring in additional acrylic paints that they may have. Free but space is limited.

For more than forty years, American artist Roni Horn has developed a richly diverse practice that spans drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, and books. Exploring wide-ranging topics including human identity, ecology, landscape, weather, and language, Horn’s work intermingles material and context, complicating relationships between object, subject, and viewer in the process.

a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.

"I grew up in Calcutta, a city that used to be the capital of the British Empire in India. Much of the city’s history, most visibly experienced in its architecture, is marked by its relationships with a multitude of cultures that either lived there or passed through it – Afghan, Armenian, Chinese, Dutch, French, Jewish, Mughal, Portuguese, and of course, the British. But obfuscating these remnants are layers of urban debris, the material culture of a haphazard modernization that is simultaneously generic and out-of-place."  Read more about Olson's work.

We can’t avoid public speaking! Everything from one-on-one conversations to presenting on a stage to a large crowd is public speaking. In this interactive session, Dr. Jake Livengood from MIT will share public speaking strategies to help you prepare for presentations, engage audiences, reduce anxiety, and even frame your research for a more general audience.

Interactive Workshop: Improving your Communication Skills

Are you looking to develop your communication skills? Would you like strategies for speaking publicly with confidence? Dr. Jake Livengood from MIT will lead this interactive workshop to help participants practice their verbal, vocal, and visual communication. Learn to handle awkward moments in general and in unexpected high-pressure situations like a presentation, working in a team, or in a job interview. Registration for this workshop is by application only.

Ever since beings have first inhabited its terrain, the world has provided us with a plethora of resources, rolling landscapes within all climates, a chance to form relationships with other organisms and much more. However, western ideologies deriving from the industrialization era triggered an environmental downfall for generations to come. Although interest in materialistic products and the mass market system stimulated the great trade of art, we have lost sight of the planet’s natural beauty and often take its generous offerings for granted.

This pop show is a chance for members of our community: local artists, students and anyone who shares a passion for the world we live in, to pay tribute to our Earth. We encourage artists to display the dynamic connection they feel with their ground and express it in any media they desire. Be creative, all are welcome to submit their work!
