COVID-19 pandemic generates unfounded fears of cash

We continue to see the spread of misinformation in the vacuum created by a lack of definitive scientific knowledge about how this deadly new virus behaves and how it can finally be contained. Some reports and agencies are using pseudo-science to spread a negative message about not using cash during the epidemic. in response, many of the central banks (including Bank of Canada) are issuing statements supporting the continued use of cash.  It is no more “dirty” than most surfaces in our daily lives, from door knobs to touchscreens, from handrails in trains and buses to tables in restaurants and pubs. Any physical object has surfaces which can potentially become contaminated by germs or even a virus.
Singling out cash makes no sense. Cash is typically not publicly displayed. Cash is usually in a pocket, purse, or cash drawer where it is much less likely to be exposed to respiratory droplets when people sneeze, or cough.
ATMIA Canada reacted quickly to this situation, as we believe it can harm the much-needed economic recovery that will come.  Letters were sent to the Finance and Health ministers of each province and federal government, cautioning them to not drive a loss in confidence in cash or it will slow the recovery.
Hill and Knowlton was instrumental in helping ATMIA Canada turn around these letters and ensure that the future discussion around cash is driving a return to consumer confidence – and merchant’s enthusiastic acceptance of cash post COVID-19.
In addition, ATMIA has created a Coronavirus web page that is open to the general public.  It includes links to numerous statements on the use of cash during the pandemic and infographics that ATM operators can display to promote cash and ATMs.   Links to statements by numerous central banks and government agencies are available as additional references on cash use.  And any news item that includes a reference to coronavirus is added to the news feed.
Stay safe and keep well in these challenging times.

Big Money. Vulnerable Targets.

The latest trends in ATM and CIT Crimes.

What are the most tempting targets for criminals looking for a fast payout? Wherever large amounts of cash are at their most vulnerable: ATMs, Cash Machines, and Cash Couriers. Criminals see all types of cash machines as mini safes, but with a much lower level of security than bank vaults. Similarly, armored carriers are vulnerable and exposed when parked with doors wide open while messengers are transporting cash. 3SI’s white paper, What You Need to Know: ATM & CIT Crime Trends & Solutions shows how to protect your cash, your machines, your investments, and your people from attack.
Recorded strikes on ATMs have increased dramatically, and attacks on CIT carriers remain a constant threat. Crime trends and new forms of attacks are arriving in the U.S. from other parts of the world – which is why we look forward to attending the ATMIA US Security Conference in September 2020. Emerging threats will be a lead topic of discussion, along with current crime trends and business threats. 3SI experts will be on-hand to discuss and demonstrate solutions that combat these crimes.

Member of the Month for May/June

DPL has been a loyal ATMIA member since 2006 and became a Global Sponsor in 2016.  Their story officially began in 1974. Those early days set the stage for a successful venture in telco product development, many of which are still in production. In the late 1990s, fueled by the emerging digital cellular networks, DPL began early prototyping of M2M products (now known as IoT). Hercules was born in 2004 out of their R&D department, ready to take the ATM industry by storm. It quickly became DPL's flagship product due to ease of installation, obvious ROI and unique feature set. Hercules is now responsible for handling over 100 million financial transactions each year through its PCI DSS certified platform.
