Dear Member,
May you be safe in this intense time of the global pandemic.

This month, we’ll conduct a member survey to hear what your thoughts, concerns and requests are of us for the period of lockdown and beyond, when we finally move into a post-pandemic phase. The results will guide us in our advocacy efforts on your behalf.

We have set up a coronavirus and ATMs portal to keep you updated on industry impacts of the pandemic.

This week, we sent out a public message praising the unsung champions of our industry who maintain cash access, and other essential services, on ATMs while social distance policies are implemented across the world. I can’t thank you enough for these frontline efforts to keep as many ATMs as possible operating 24 x 7 throughout the crisis.

Looking ahead, we need to plan for how the industry can position itself for emerging as strongly as possible from the pandemic, as normality is gradually restored. The time during lockdown can be used as productively as possible for thinking out of the box about our industry and its future.

2020 saw the end of support for W7 and the beginning of a few years of migration to W10, with or without hypervisor, leading up to 2023 when the post WinCE world for retail ATMs, which run on WinCE, will kick in. Why not use this period of OS migration to migrate to a future-proofed new ecosystem, as described in our Next Gen ATM project, so that the ATM becomes integrated with the mobile world and positions itself for the vastly interconnected Internet of Things? The point is that there are opportunities for delivering some excellent changes to our industry during this time of crisis and of large-scale migration. Yes, there is uncertainty, yes, there are risks, and, yes, there are many challenges. But the vision of a robust and relevant future for ATMs can energise and inspire us enough to see beyond the present troubles we’re all facing. And ATMIA, which has served the industry for over two decades, will be there with you on this journey into the future.

Warmest regards,

Mike Lee

Budget 2020 to protect future of cash and keep ATMs open across the country

The Government is set to announce new measures to help protect cash machines - and our access to cash - in today's Budget.

New laws will aim to ensure that people who rely on cash, including vulnerable groups and local communities across the UK, can access it as and when they need it.

The Treasury is expected to start talks with the industry and regulators - the Bank of England, Financial Conduct Authority and Payment Systems Regulator - around legislation immediately after the Budget.
