A Culture of Civic Action
|
As the November elections approach, the Civic Engagement Team is shifting into high gear. Operating out of the Experiential Learning Office, this student-led group has a history of state and national recognition and is dedicated to ensuring that every eligible student has the resources to actively engage in their communities.
Olivia Kent-Horton ’27, the university's voter registration specialist, spends her hours tackling everything from absentee ballot logistics to out-of-state voting resources. Many students are voting away from home for the first time and considering local issues, such as Pierce County's minimum wage increases. Kent-Horton emphasizes that voting while in college is an important tool for personal growth and self-advocacy.
“When you step away from your own world, and you go someplace new, it expands what becomes important to you, and it helps you find your value systems,” Kent-Horton said.

President Isiaah Crawford co-authored an op-ed in The News Tribune with the presidents of Pacific Lutheran University and University of Washington Tacoma. In the article, the three presidents argue that higher education is key to the region's economic future.
"The great challenges of today are complicated," they write. "Solving them requires critical thinking and nuanced leadership. Students need to be able to think across multiple fields, work with people who approach problems differently, evaluate evidence, and embrace complexity. Our goal is not just to prepare graduates for the workforce, but to prepare them to help industries to evolve and thrive."

Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown will deliver the Fall 2026 Susan Resneck Pierce Lecture in Public Affairs and the Arts at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, in Wheelock Student Center, Upper Marshall Hall.
Brown will address the critical legal and societal questions facing higher education today. He will draw from his extensive career to examine the vital balance between individual and institutional academic freedom. Brown will explore the fundamental rights of educators, researchers, and universities to pursue truth, conduct open inquiry, and manage curricula free from institutional censorship.
Brown will also share personal reflections on how his own education shaped his professional path from Steilacoom to Morehouse College, Harvard Law School, and the state’s highest legal office. The event will feature a keynote address followed by a Q&A session. The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.
