IN THE ARTS
Santa Fe Prep's Performing and Visual Arts Departments will be taking 30 students to this year's Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) Fine Arts Festival at Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. Performing arts students will participate in scenes and monologues, jazz band, rock tent, coffeehouse, one-act plays, and art exhibits, and many students in the visual arts will participate in portfolio reviews.

ISAS is comprised of more than 90 schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arizona, and New Mexico, and the ISAS Fine Arts Festival has grown to be the nation’s premiere annual regional arts festival among independent schools, with more than 3,000 students, from more than 40 schools, participating.
Nine Santa Fe Prep theater students recently participated in a dance master class conducted by cast members of the Broadway touring production of the musical “A Chorus Line." Rowan Dwyer '20, Gabe Falkner '19, Angelina Friedrichs '21, Faye Heneghan '20, Hannah Koolpe '20, Sophia Koolpe '20, Lily Lardon '21, Hunter Merriman '18, and Urian Vasquez '21 learned choreography from the musical during a two-hour class at West Mesa High School in Albuquerque. After dancing with the cast, the nine dancers saw the evening production of the show at Popejoy Hall with non-dancing Prep students who joined the outing.

The master class was sponsored by the New Mexico High School Musical Theater Awards program, which “recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance, and honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to performing arts education"; Santa Fe Prep's recent production of "Curtains" is one of thirteen entries for the 2018 awards. Nominees will be announced on April 16 in the categories of best actor/actress, best production, best direction, best ensemble, and best supporting actor/actress. Best actor and actress nominees will be invited to perform at Popejoy Hall on May 5 to compete to represent New Mexico at the 2018 Jimmy Awards in New York City.
ATHLETIC NEWS
Congratulations to the Boys 7th Grade Basketball team! After a great season, they finished off the year by winning the consolation bracket in the APIAL Tournament.

Now that the season has finally turned to spring, the Tennis teams are off and swinging! Both the boys and girls teams recently competed in a large tournament this weekend involving 11 teams, with the girls posting a great podium finish in 3rd place.

The Baseball team recently returned from a tournament in Santa Rosa and begins their district play this week with games against Tierra Encantada Charter School, McCurdy and Raton.

The Track & Field teams did a great job of qualifying relay teams and athletes for the state competition at the ATC Invite. Competition resumes for the teams this week as they participate in the Golden Spike Classic hosted by Santa Fe High School.

The Boys Lacrosse team is roughly halfway through their league play and currently sits in second place. They play Sandia Prep and Rio Rancho this week in two very important league matches.
The Girls Lacrosse team has been cutting their teeth against Colorado teams thus far. Based on their success against the Colorado schools, they enter league play with a lot of optimism. Games this week are against Rio Rancho and Los Alamos.

The Middle School Golf team has a few competitions under their belt this spring and, at present, sits in third place in the conference overall.

You can access all Santa Fe Prep game schedules here:
Prep Athletics Calendar.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
As part of the exploration of New Mexico Natural History, the 7th grade is raising nearly 50 trout in a 50-gallon tank in the Middle School Science Lab.This is a program sponsored by Trout Unlimited: topics covered include the nitrogen cycle; water testing; the lifecycle, anatomy, and physiology of trout; and their unique adaptations.

Students are also making connections among the New Mexico Watershed, climate change, and our local rivers. Students are in charge of maintaining the aquarium and monitoring the behavior of the trout from egg through fry stage. In late April, the students will be joined by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to release the fish in the Pecos River. At the river, the class will do lab work to learn more about the invertebrates in the river.

Additionally, as an after-school activity, local guiding company Land of Enchantment Guides has offered a fly fishing course for our middle school students that includes learning how to fish, tying knots, making flies, culminating with a day on the river.
Middle School English teachers Sarah Stark and Alan Taylor most enthusiastically invite you to attend this year’s gala celebration of Middle School poetry, prose, fiction, and opinions at a literary gathering named “Out Of Our Minds,” or OOOM. You will be astonished, delighted, awed, provoked into deeper reflection, refreshed (light refreshments will be served), and then depart with a deeper appreciation (and healthy envy) of high-achieving Middle School students.

Date: Tuesday, May 1
Time: 5:00 pm
Place: Santa Fe Prep Library
We hope you will join us!

SHOUT OUTS
Click here for a great article about Prep's CCL (Citizen's Climate Lobby) TAP. It is truly inspiring to see our students taking such direct action through their TAP commitment!  Thank you to Prep parent Wendi Odai  for channeling their energy in such a productive direction.

In other exciting news for this TAP, CAVU (Calm Air: Visibility Unlimited) brought their camera crew to Prep this week to interview these students for Chapter 3 of their Unearthed NM initiative, which will air next week. Stay tuned!
Congratulations to Nathan Hayes-Rich '18 for winning the Senate Chamber of Congressional Debate at the District National Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament in ABQ over Spring Break; and to Sarbjot Jessop '18 who has been selected from a large pool of juniors and seniors to compete at the National S&D Tournament in the World Schools Debate this summer. Good luck at the tourney, Nathan and Sarbjot!

STUDENT ACTIVISM AT SANTA FE PREP
Santa Fe Prep's GIRL UP Club is hosting a Glow-In-The-Dark Volleyball Tournament this Friday, April 6 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Prep gym. Proceeds from this event will go directly to Girl Up, who funds multiple agencies, including: the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which works to ensure that girls in refugee camps from Ethiopia and Uganda have equal access to quality education; and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), which works to prevent child marriage and teenage pregnancy in India and Guatemala with the help of peer educators to lead girls clubs, and by providing a safe space for girls to learn about nutrition, money management, and negotiating for their rights.
Kudos to senior Sarbjot Jessop for standing up and sharing his voice at the March For Our Lives rally on Saturday, March 24. Click above to hear what SJ has to say.
A group of seniors created an opportunity last month for interested students in all grades to send letters of concern about gun violence in America to New Mexico's Senators, Representatives, and Governor.
