CMS Takes Steps to Push Trump Drug Pricing Plan

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed its 2019 annual payment rules for the hospital outpatient department. The rule builds upon the Trump administration’s “blueprint,” focusing on lower drug prices and reduced out-of-pocket costs. The link includes BIO’s opinions in response to the proposed policy ideas. The deadline to submit public comments on the proposals is September 24, 2018.

UTHSC Startup Oculo Therapy Develops Novel Therapies for Eye-Related Diseases

Oculo Therapy, LLC is making strides in the treatment of eye-related diseases with medical innovations focused on improving drug delivery. The UTHSC startup has developed an approach to treating glaucoma and other eye-related diseases with topical medicines designed to bypass the issues associated with standard eye drop medications. Used to treat glaucoma patients, the once-daily topical medicine reduces IOP levels in patients 50 percent more than current treatments, a stabilizing effect which minimizes stress to the optic nerve in turn makes it easier for patients to stick with their treatment regimen. The novel therapeutic was developed by Monica M. Jablonski, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
