RWJBarnabas Health registered dietitian/nutritionist Kristin Carlino will give a presentation followed by a brief Q&A for NJCU students, focusing on the nutrition topics you need to know.

Kristin is the managing dietitian/nutritionist for JCMC Food FARMacy Program at Jersey City Medical Center and has nearly a decade of experience specializing in weight loss and management.

She helped launch the Food FARMacy program in early 2021. This excellent program provides free nutrition education and free groceries to those most in need. In addition, she co-leads evidence-based weight-loss classes through FitsMe Health (formerly of Mount Sinai) alongside psychologists and exercise physiologists as well as counseling private clients at their convenience. Through her passion project, GoodFoodBadDoodles, she has authored several nutrition guides and one book: The Ultimate Illustrated Nutrition Book for Beginners.

The NJCU University Senate Standing Committee on Faculty & Professional Staff Affairs is soliciting nominations from the university community (faculty, staff and administrators)
for Distinguished Service Award.

Officially retired members of the university community are eligible for the Distinguished Service Award. Recipients of emeritus status are not eligible. Any faculty member,
administrator, librarian, or professional staff member who meets all of the criteria attached is eligible.

All applicants must have 10 (ten) cumulative years of full-time service at NJCU. A faculty member, administrator, librarian, or professional staff member to receive the Distinguished
Service Award must have demonstrated commitment to the university, its mission and its students.  He/she/they must have achieved distinction through significant contributions to the university and community. He/she/they shall demonstrate evidence, post-retirement, of continuity in contributions to the university, to professional organizations, or to the community. Please see the attached policy for further details.

All nominations must provide the following:

NJCU and TheDream.US, the nation’s largest college and career success program for undocumented immigrant students, announced a new partnership to provide scholarships for New Jersey immigrant youth to achieve their higher education dreams.

Through the new partnership, New Jersey’s immigrant youth will be eligible to apply for TheDream.US National Scholarship. The National Scholarship is for Dreamers who are about to graduate high school or earn a GED; current community college students; and current university students, including current NJCU students.

Today, “988” is the three-digit, nationwide phone number to connect directly to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. By calling or texting 988, you’ll connect with mental health professionals 24/7 that provides confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress. Those experiencing a mental health crisis or those worried about someone who may need crisis support can call this number.

Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect directly to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline which serves our nation’s Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and those who support them. For texts, Veterans should continue to text the Veterans Crisis Lifeline short code: 838255.

These centers are supported by local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress.

Dr. Philip Kreniske earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from CUNY in 2016 and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Kreniske concentrates on the impact of socioeconomic factors and digital technology on adolescent and young adult development in the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa. He will discuss his research with vulnerable populations across the globe. In this insightful talk, Dr. Kreniske will discuss his recent publication, entitled “HIV and Suicide Risk Across Adolescence and Young Adulthood: An Examination of Socio‐Demographic, Contextual and Psychosocial Risk Factors for Attempted Suicide in a Longitudinal Cohort of Ageing Adolescents Affected by HIV Living in the New York City Area.”

Eugene Campbell '18 (B.A. in Psychology) and '20 (M.A. in Educational Psychology), a former men's basketball student-athlete, is featured in New Jersey Monthly Magazine, discussing his Hudson County upbringing and winding basketball career which inspired him to create his nonprofit organization, Walk A Mile N Our Shoes. The Jersey City nonprofit helps homeless people and low-income families. Campbell continues to play basketball professionally overseas in Tunisia. | Read more

James Maguire ’77 (B.A. in Elementary Education) of Forked River, N.J. is 67 years old but not slowing down anytime soon. He was a 2022 inductee into the New Jersey Strength and Power Hall of Fame. He owns a combined 10 state, national, and world records in three different age groups. Maguire is a retired educator who worked as public school teacher, coach, counselor and principal in Toms River N.J. before later serving as a college administrator at Middlesex County College. | Read more

James Edward Lambert '68 (B.A. in Special Education) of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Plainfield, N.J., passed away on December 29, 2022, at the age of 77. He taught for more than 35 years at Cook Elementary School in Plainfield and Plainfield High School, and was a member of the faculty at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains. He was named Teacher of The Year multiple times during his career at Plainfield High. He also was a varsity baseball coach at Holy Trinity High School in Westfield, varsity baseball coach at Plainfield High School, coached football, softball and girls’ soccer at Plainfield High, and was a baseball coach at Union Catholic. He was also a long-time certified referee in basketball, track and field, volleyball, tennis, and swimming. | Obituary

Daniel J. Minch of Binghamton, N.Y., an Associate Director of Athletics at the university for 13 years from the 1977-78 season through September 1991, passed away on June 25, 2022 at the age of 77. After leaving Jersey City State in 1991, he became director of athletics at Broome Community College, where he spent the final 20 years of his career. He was named NACDA Athletic Director of the Year in 2005. He spent over 45 years as a forceful advocate for student athletes. | Obituary

Hinda Jane Pollack (nee Chasis) '61 (B.A. in Secondary Education) of Dripping Springs, Texas, formerly of Jersey City and Westfield, N.J., passed away on December 23, 2022, at the age of 83. She was a special education teacher at the A. Harry Moore School in Jersey City. Her late husband, Kenneth Pollack '62, earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from the university. | Obituary

Gloria Margherita Spadaro (nee Tartaglia) '81 (B.S. in Health Education and School Nursing) of Marlboro, N.J., and formerly of Elmwood Park, N.J., passed away on January 3, 2023, at the age of 82. She was a founding member of the Lupus Foundation of NJ and worked tirelessly on research funding and education, holding various positions including president. | Obituary
