Message from Carol LeBovidge
Membership Secretary, WRJ Northeast District

Over the many years that I have been involved with my local sisterhood, WRJ Northeast District (formerly District 1) and WRJ, I have often been asked, “How did you get so involved?” My answer very simply has always been, “I was asked.”

When I moved to North Andover, MA, in 1981, the first thing I did was to join the temple and then the sisterhood. Although I had family close by, I wanted to join the temple for my two sons to join religious school and then become bar mitzvah. Our first son became a bar mitzvah within a year and a half of our joining the temple.

The sisterhood’s closing luncheon was in May after we moved in.  Although I knew no one, I went. I was greeted by many women and became very comfortable being in their presence. The spring before my son’s bar mitzvah, I was asked to be on the sisterhood board.  I don’t remember what capacity the first job was, but after that I held just about every position – from program chair to membership chair to vice president to president and to treasurer. It was an incredible journey.

Sometime during this time, the president of my local sisterhood was asked to submit names for nomination to the WRJ District 1 Board and then to the WRJ Board. On these boards I met some of the most incredible and influential women in our movement. I served on the WRJ Board for twenty years, stepping down just two years ago. I have also served the WRJ Northeast District Board for about 20 years. I will be stepping down from that position in October of 2018.

The journey has been exciting and rewarding. I encourage all of you to say “Yes” when asked -- and you could also travel on this amazing journey.

By the time you read this I will have travelled to Nashville, TN, for the Fried Leadership Conference. I will have reconnected with all my friends in WRJ land and celebrated Purim with them. I am sure that we will have a blast.

Temple Emanuel, Andover, MA

Are you passionate about WRJ? Are you ready to take your leadership skills to the next level?  Are you looking for an exciting new challenge?  Why not consider becoming a part of the WRJ Northeast District Executive Committee?
Would you like to get involved or stay involved with your district on a leadership level? The District Nominating Committee is seeking women who represent the broadest range of experience, background and geographic location to join our team for the 2018-2020 term that begins at our district convention in Framingham, Massachusetts, October 25-28, 2018.  Are you a leader in your sisterhood? A current leader on our board that would like to continue? An outgoing sisterhood president? Or are you someone who would like to get more involved at the district level?
It is your sisterhood’s right, privilege, and opportunity to identify qualified candidates and encourage them to submit their names for consideration by the committee.  Not only is it an honor for the women, it is also a source of pride for your sisterhood and congregation to have one of your members serve on the WRJ Northeast District Executive Committee.  Your sisterhood will have firsthand knowledge of WRJ and Northeast District activities and programs, and can share in the decision-making process of the district.
You can find our job descriptions HERE.
The application is a google form that can be found HERE.
The term of office is two years and will begin in October, 2018.
The slate will be announced in June 2018.
The application deadline is Sunday, May 6, 2018.

Temple Isaiah, Lexington, MA

Temple Isaiah Sisterhood had a hamantaschen-making party in the Temple kitchen on February 22 during school vacation week. Mothers, grandmothers, and children of all ages enjoyed making great hamantaschen from dough prepared in advance by our co-president, Bronte Abraham, and our own creative fillings. The cookies all came out great, and there were games and snacks for the non-cooks, too.

Temple Shalom, Newton, MA

The Sisterhood of Temple Shalom celebrated their very first "Spa Kallah" at the Cranwell Resort in Lenox, MA, in February. Aside from 39 of us cleansing our bodies with exercise and spa treatments, our soulful rabbis, Allison Berry and Laura Abrasely, treated us to a fun evening of "Cocktails and Commentary" along with Shabbat services and a Torah stroll around the beautiful Cranwell grounds. Additional events included our very first YES Fund wine raffle and a very competitive cookbook swap. We were sorry to leave on Sunday but can't wait for our next Spa Kallah!

Communities Respond to the Parkland Shooting

We express heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by the shooting in Parkland, Florida. We offer condolences to families and friends of those who were murdered, and empathy with survivors and their families and friends. At a certain level, we are all affected by this senseless massacre, because we realize that our own community may be next. Together with WRJ, URJ, NFTY and the RAC, we stand in solidarity with Parkland, especially with its students, against the gun lobby that prevents regulation of assault weapons on our streets and in our schools. Stronger together!
