MAG HONORS MCG ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
ATLANTA – Bruce M. LeClair, M.D., MPH, FAAFP, an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, received the Medical Association of Georgia’s Physician’s Award for Community Service during a ceremony that took place during MAG’s 164th House of Delegates meeting on Jekyll Island on October 20. The award recognizes physicians who demonstrate a love for the community outside of the regular scope of practice.
In his nomination letter, Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) President Loy D. “Chip” Cowart, M.D., FAAFP, noted that, “Dr. LeClair has always understood that being involved in the community affects positive change in people’s health. With this mindset, he has been a tireless advocate to make quality health care a priority for those without access.”
For nearly 25 years, Dr. LeClair has volunteered as a faculty supervisor at the Eighth Street Clinic, which is a medical student-run health clinic that cares for Augusta’s most vulnerable populations – including the homeless and the uninsured – and which serves as a learning venue for medical students and family medicine residents.
It is also worth noting that Dr. LeClair and the student chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association founded the Augusta Women’s Free Clinic, and in 2014 he joined the founding faculty for the Augusta Equality Clinic – a free clinic that focuses on the needs of the LGBT community.
Dr. LeClair was inducted into The Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2018, he was honored as GAFP’s Physician of the Year in 2009 and GAFP’s Educator of the Year in 2013, and he received the Greater Augusta Healthcare Network’s Community Service Award in 2017.
Dr. Cowart concluded that, “Given his ability to bridge the divide between academic medicine and community health, Dr. LeClair is an asset to both Augusta University and the medical profession.”
In accepting the award, Dr. LeClair stressed that, “I could not have done any of this service without the dedication and help of the students of the Medical College of Georgia and the faculty and staff of the St. Vincent de Paul Health Center and the Department of Family Medicine at Augusta University.”
Dr. LeClair practices the full range of family medicine, including inpatient and outpatient care, obstetrics, and minor surgery. He has a medical degree from the University of California, Davis.
Dr. LeClair lives in Evans with his wife, Sheila LeClair, and their daughter, Caitlin LeClair.
