Spring Concert Details to Note

Dear families,

We are very excited to welcome you to our Spring Concert at NOCA. The performance will be on Thursday, April 27th  in the NOCA auditorium. All students in Grades K-8th are performing in this concert, as well as all band and Upper School choir students.

Attendance at the concert is extremely important for a successful concert and music education; please let us know of conflicts via shulbert@nocacademy.org (5th-8th grade and choir) or ablank@nocacdemy.org  (K-4th grade and band).

We looking forward to performing and enjoying music with our NOCA community!

Upper School Band

This year we moved last year's Beginning Band into our Upper Band. We have 23 students in that ensemble, and they are working on a variety of more advanced large group, solo and small ensemble music for the Spring Concert. Congrats to the Upper Band Section leaders!

Beginning Band

We started another Beginning Band and offered it to this year's 7th and 8th grader. We have 30+ students involved. They come to band just twice a week yet are making great progress! Congrats to Beginning Band section leaders:

Kindergarten 

Kindergarten students learn about music through movement and experience. In music class they spend time singing, beat-finding, listening to great music, playing classroom instruments, and hearing stories which teach music. 

1st and 2nd Grades 

1st and 2nd graders started their year learning about the orchestra, instruments, and instrument families. They explore basic rhythm and notation, sing a variety of great music, play classroom instruments, move, dance, and listen to learn about the great works of music.

A few of the great works they study include: Peter and the Wolf (Prokofiev), The Sorceror’s Apprentice (Dukas), The Nutcracker (Tchaikovsky), The Carnival of the Animals (Saint Saens), and The Four Seasons (Vivaldi). They also explore various genres of music, including: opera, bluegrass, Irish, and jazz

3rd and 4th Grades 

3rd and 4th grade students have spent time reviewing the instruments and their families, listening and studying great works of music, playing a variety of instruments, and studying music theory more in-depth.

Currently they are applying their theory knowledge to playing the recorder! Third graders are playing several beginning-level pieces that use the first three notes of recorder-playing. Fourth graders are working through the Recorder Karate curriculum. They earn a “belt” for their recorder for each piece that they pass!

First Drama Performance a Smashing Success!

Jane Austen: Completely Zoomed brought in over 400 guests to celebrate NOCA Drama department's debut performance. Congratulations to all the theater players, crew, staff, and faculty who helped make the weekend a big success. We have a very talented group of students and are so proud of their accomplishment! A special thanks to Owen's Community College for loaning lights and sound equipment to elevate our performance on stage.
