Najmeh Malekpour Bahabadi, a student in the Land-Use Planning, Management, and Design PhD program, presented part of her master’s thesis research at the 2024 ConCave Ph.D. Symposium held at Georgia Tech University under the advisory of Assistant Professor Dr. Turturo.
Najmeh’s research, titled “Community Infrastructure: Cisterns as Urban Artifacts in Yazd,” addresses the effects of global warming that place vast populations out of reach of fresh drinking water and advanced late-stage capitalism that continues to propagate models of urban sprawl that do not value architectural heritage. Based on typological theories, the research expands the canon of architectural history to study a little-known water infrastructure—Qanats and Cisterns—that has come to define some Persian desert cities.
