Charter(ing) a bold path
Let's give a round of applause and cheer on TU's Collins College of Business team – Eric Aplis, Marcos Buitrago Gomez, Morgan Kubala and Christian Sherman – one of only 15 teams advancing to compete at the Americas level of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge. Getting this far has "really immersed us in what it takes to get a thorough evaluation together based not only on one or two trends, but by going through years of financial statements, evaluating macroeconomic trends and paying close attention to the socio-political climate and its impact," said Aplis, a finance senior. "It's allowed us to demonstrate the skills we have been able to develop and apply them in a real-world scenario."

Reading, writing and knowledge-sharing
Many TU students collaborate with their professors on research projects and some of those endeavors result in publications. That was the result recently for student-professor teams in finance and computer science. "It has been a privilege to work alongside Professor Eric Olson for the past year," said finance senior Samuel Devore. "My undergraduate research experience has taught me that just because something appears to be true on the surface does not make it so. Finding the root cause of what we observe can be an arduous process, but the ability to do so effectively is a valuable skill that is applicable to any career path or personal endeavor."

Programmed for victory
Five teams from the Tandy School of Computer Science recently competed in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) South Central Regional Contest. At the programming smackdown, the mighty trio of Aleph Naught – James Hale, Bedlan Parker and Robert Geraghty – emerged as the top in Oklahoma and now moves on to the North American Division Championships. "ICPC not only fosters a sense of camaraderie between computer science students," said Hale, "it also incentivizes one to improve their programming skillset on the types of problems given during coding interviews. I would encourage anyone interested to participate."

Exploring the great outdoors
While this spring semester presented a host of challenges for students to keep up their spirits, the addition of TU Outdoors at Thomas Plaza made a world of difference by giving our campus community a safe space away from the worries of pandemic life. On Friday, this welcoming meeting ground will close for the semester. Media studies senior Ryan Bennett, who produces segments for TUTV, set out to document students' thoughts about the positive impact the first season of TU Outdoors has had on them.
