Earth Day
On April 22 the TDSB participated in Earth Day. Students, staff, and caregivers participated in picking up litter in our schoolyards and within the wider community across ward 22. On March 25, 2022 TDSB also participated in Earth Hour. The TDSB turned off non-essential electricity at 2 pm. By doing so, schools were able to reduce their energy use up to 60%. A special shout-out to two of our elementary schools in our ward that made it to the top 10 energy saving schools across the Board--Lucy Maud Montgomery Public School and Joseph Brant Senior Public School. A special congratulations to Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute for coming in at number 11 in the secondary school category.
Sikh Heritage Month at the TDSB
Since 2016 The Toronto District School Board has recognized April as Sikh Heritage Month. The TDSB was the first school board in Canada to recognize April as Sikh Heritage Month. During this month, Sikh Canadians celebrate Vaisakhi which is also known as Khalsa Day across Ontario.
Latin-America History Month at the TDS
April was also Latin-America History Month at the TDSB. This year the theme was (DeColonizing) Latin-America History Month & Beyond: Learning about our collective pasts through the art of healing.
The Latin-America History Month Volunteer Planning Committee has made a commitment to work in solidarity with Indigenous Nations of Turtle Island (Canada) to decolonize understandings of Latin-America.
