Williams-Mystic is incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend, chanteyman, and colleague, Don Sineti.
A gifted singer and a lover of the marine environment, Don became well-known across the country for his chantey singing and his powerful bass-baritone voice. Don was a regular fixture of the Mystic Seaport for decades, spending many years as a skills instructor for Williams-Mystic and sharing his love of cetaceans and music with students through special performances and reunions. We will always cherish the opportunities to learn from and sing with Don, and his generations of WM chantey students are a part of his legacy and carrying on a tradition he deeply loved.
If you would like to read more about Don and his impact, please visit the following tribute written by Erik Ingmundson, Maria Petrillo, and Liz DeArruda, shared with their permission.

New Blog Post: "Homecoming"

“Underneath the intellectual rigor is the emotional feeling of connecting to people in places who are experiencing the challenges of living in coastal communities in real time.”
In Fall 2022, we were honored to have been joined by Eric Laschever F'77, who served as Williams-Mystic's first Senior Fellow. To learn more about his experience and see just how much the program has changed in 45 years, click the link below to read our latest blog post!

Job & Internship Postings at the Mystic Seaport Museum

If you are looking for more opportunities to work with the Mystic Seaport Museum, we are happy to share a number of exciting internships and fellowships they are offering!
Applications open until February 15
The summer internship program at Mystic Seaport Museum is for graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in public humanities, anthropology, Native American, African, or African American Studies, Queer Studies, museum education or other museum studies, maritime studies, or other related fields. This project will explore and reinterpret histories of New England to students, scholars, and a national public, challenging prevailing narratives about the region as founded on principles of liberty and justice for all.
Since 1989, the Museum’s Paul Cuffe Fellowship has provided funds to researchers from universities, colleges, and museums. The fellowships are offered to encourage research that considers the participation of Native and African Americans in the maritime activities of America, particularly in New England.
Applications open until March 17
During the summer of 2023, Munson Institute fellows, faculty, and guest speakers will interrogate the region’s maritime past as a part of the multi-institutional Reimagining New England Histories: Historical Injustice, Sovereignty and Freedom project funded by the Mellon Foundation and in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice at Brown University and Williams College.
There are a number of seasonal and overnight instructor and educator positions currently available at Mystic Seaport.
**There may be an opportunity for discounted or bartered housing for alumni & friends working at Mystic Seaport this summer. Please inquire with Amanda Severin for more details

Williams-Mystic Featured in Published Paper

Katie Brandler, a senior at Pelham Memorial High School (Pelham NY), who began doing research two years ago with Jim Carlton, has published her work in the January 2023 issue of the scientific journal Marine Pollution Bulletin — “First report of marine debris as a species dispersal vector in the temperate Northwest Atlantic Ocean”.
Katie collected marine debris in New York and Connecticut and worked with Jim at the Carlton Marine Science Center to analyze the many species that were found on the debris that had rafted ashore. Featured in the article is a lovely soda can with numerous species that washed ashore with a large mop of green algae, attached on Mumford Cove beach and found by Amanda Severin F01. Also featured is a spectacular tire with lots of beautiful biofouling retrieved by Marine Ecology Professor Tim Pusack on Napatree Beach.

Submit Your Recipe for the Global Galley!

As legend has it, Williams-Mystic was notoriously conceived upon a napkin. Thus, through the universal language of food, the Williams-Mystic Alumni Council has devised a way for all alumni to simultaneously preserve our beloved program's unique origin while leveraging the past for a more just, equitable and representative future.
We invite you to thoughtfully submit a recipe—photographed and legibly handwritten on a napkin—that you have found yourself unable to live without and/or incapable of describing yourself apart from.
Each month's eGam feature will provide both an adventurous culinary exploration for those willing to expand their palate and a tasty vehicle to honor heritage.
We look forward to your submissions!
