In a recent study published in Network Science, Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics Bruno Abrahao, along with three researchers from NYU Abu Dhabi investigated the shifts in mobility patterns within the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on a neighborhood-level analysis of mobility and case count data in Chicago. The research team discovered that COVID-19 exposure primarily took place within an individual's own ZIP Code and demographic group. Utilizing an epidemiological composite metric, the researchers measured and analyzed mobility counterfactuals related to the epidemic's progression. This approach enabled them to identify disparities in case rates across racial and ethnic lines. "The study concludes that segregation within the mobility network has played a significant role in creating unequal COVID-19 case rates among various demographic groups,” said Professor Abrahao. “Our findings hold important implications for policy making in response to pandemic situations, as understanding the contagion given different mobility and segregation dynamics can help inform targeted interventions to reduce disparities in health outcomes."
