(SACRAMENTO, CA) – The California State Fair is home to the third largest Commercial Craft Beer Competition in the country! For the 2018 Competition, there were more than 1550 Craft Beer entries. Breweries from all over the state compete for Best of Show, Brewery of the Year and Best of Category. In 2018, Captain Fatty’s, located in Santa Barbara County placed first for Best of Show and Mraz of El Dorado County won Brewery of the Year. Teckam has taught beer enthusiasts the art of judging for the past 14 years. He judges competitions all over the state. For the past 22 years, Teckam has judged the CA State Fair Commercial Craft Beer Competition and the CA State Fair Homebrew Competition.
"I've been in the Beer Judge Certification Program judge since 1997. I am currently at the rank of Grand Master 6, and I teach beer and mead judging in Northern California. I have judged at over 200 competitions", said David Teckam, Lead Judge CA State Fair Commercial Craft Brew Competition. “The California State Fair Craft Beer Competition is twice as big as other competitions in the state.”
There are only three other people in the world that out rank Teckam as a Grand Master 6 judge. The veteran in the beer world will continue to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the competition as lead judge.
The Best of Show and Brewery of the Year winners will be publicly recognized at a press event at the Capitol on Thursday, June 27, 2019. The winners are also invited to pour their award-winning brew at the Best of California Tasting Reception prior to the California State Fair Gala later that evening and at Best of California State Fair Brewfest on Saturday, July 20th during the 2019 CA State Fair. The winners in all categories will be recognized at an awards luncheon prior to the Best of California State Fair Brewfest on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Miller Lite Racetrack Grandstand. Tickets for Brewfest will go on sale soon. Check back at CAStateFair.org for tickets. Beer lovers can also taste the top brews during the California State Fair, July 12th-July 28th.
